THE SKINNY: The selling feature for me was the horizontal compression straps. Key reason is that you can compress your sleeping bag into a smaller cylinder instead of a space-eating cannon ball. Also, when they say military surplus, they weren't lying. Mine not only came with faint wear signs, but had a USMC thing stuck to it. I would have cared, but this bag is as tough as nails. One thing anyone purchasing this thing should know, is that it's huge, as in too huge to cinch down if you have a more compact sleeping bag. So, if you have a 20 degree rated mummy sleeping bag or a 30 degree rectangular sleeping bag, (I had both and both fit pretty well) this thing works for you.

PROS:

Indestructable
Plenty of Compression

CONS:

Too big for practically sized sleeping bags for hikers
Came dirty

SUMMARY: Recommend ONLY as a camping sleeping bag compression sack if you have a larger sleeping bag.

While most sleeping bag compression sacks designed for beauty first and functionality second by big name "outdoors" companies are easier to find, this puppy was bred to be functional and hearty! It's true that it's heavier and larger than those made of ripstop nylon, but look at who it's made for! It's made to be tortured and abused by soldiers. Not gently stuffed, and tugged, packed, and protectivly hauled around. We use these for our bulky 20' and COLDER mummy bags. The sack is taller than we need for these bags, but the extra material can easily be folded down. The extra room could also be utilized for sleeping bag and bulky coats. The whole thing compresses a sleeping bag down to about the size of a basketball. The bonus is, I KNOW these straps aren't going to snap or tear from the fabric. The buckles aren't going to break, and a zipper won't pop through the bag!

This is a tough and reliable bag. It is made to hold the 3 pieces of the ECW sleeping bag that are rated down to -40. I've strapped it to the side of a rucksack and beat the tar out of it, and neither the bag or straps showed any signs of wear; it was as good as new after a trip through the wash. There is a separate, smaller compression bag the military uses for places that don't require the full ECW system, look for the 'patrol sleeping bag' and compression sack if this is what you need.

One reviewer pointed out that this is a BIG compression bag for the bulkier sleeping bags. My guess is that the sleeping bags he's referring to are those you would want when camping above the Artic Circle or leading an expedition to the South Pole, it is that big. However, if you have a compact one-person tent, a newer compressible sleeping bag, this bag may be an answer to packing for you - center the pole parts in the bag and wrap/stuff everthing else around them then cinch up and then attach to your backpack. I can also see this as a means to pack extra clothing and securing it well. the uses are endless as I see it. just think outside the box and inside the bag

This bag is the best. It is sturdy and large enough to compact a good amount of items. I have a 20 degree sleeping bag, a wool blanket and a compressible camping pillow all down to the size of a basketball. I wish it had some extra way to strap to my backpack but paracord works fine for this. I highly recommend and I will buy another one soon.

Simply put, this bag is VERY durable and does exactly what it is designed to do. I have 3 of them and store everything from my sleeping bag, bulky hunting parka and bibs, and a foam sleep mat. It compresses the items down nicely and did I say this thing is tough? I had 1 stuffed with a zero degree sleeping bag and pillow and on the way to hunting camp it bounced out of the truck bed at highway speeds, it bounced, rolled and slid it's way to a rest in a ditch, other than some "road rash" the bag held up! For the price it simply can't be beat and I'm stocking up on a few more now!

I know this was used when I got it(All they had, I got it for the holidays), which is fine. But the draw string that closes the bag is usless as the plastic doesn't move into locking place anymore (Or ever did since I have had it). Just know that this bag will not be 100%.

Perfect condition. Could have been new for all I could tell. Or it belonged to a soldier who took good care of his gear. Either way this is exactly as advertised no g.i knock off here. All straps in working order. No frays or tears. Invaluable peice of gear, keeps everything small and tight inside your pack.
