4.0 out of 5 stars Get this for the maps., February 8, 2005
This review is from: Official Nintendo The Legend of Zelda: Minish Cap Player's Guide (Paperback)
By the time I bought this book, I've already completed the game twice over. I bought it anyway because I love the game, and wanted a guide for collection's sake. Blame my compulsive collector's syndrome for that, but that's me.

Anyway, let's get to the book. This is what you'd expect from an official strategy guide - lots of information about the game, and a detailed walkthrough. The information is similar to the FAQs you could get on the internet for free. In fact, I've read some that are more detailed. I guess with a lot of information to cover, at certain points, the less important ones are simplified. Still, the book pretty much covers what you need to do to beat the game, and to complete all the other mini quests that are littered throughout.

There are some omissions in it though, particularly with the things you could do after you beat the final boss. Take the Figurines collection quest for example. The guide stated that there are a total of 130 figurines, and that you could get a some goodies (a Piece of Heart, some treasures and a Sound Test) after you complete the collection. Truth is, there are a total of 136 figurines instead. A deliberate omission so as not to spoil the player? Or a geniune mistake? You be the judge.

Still, one reason you should buy this guide is the graphics, in particularly, the maps. They are presented in an orderly fashion, with detailed identification points for stuff like Minish Portals, location of Pieces of Hearts, etc. From the angle of a player who has yet to beat the game, I'd recommend this book as an additional help, since the maps are really useful. A picture does tell a thousand words. Ultimately, this saves you a lot of time, and you know time is important to you.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Must Have Companion to Time-Starved Gameplayers, February 19, 2006
This review is from: Official Nintendo The Legend of Zelda: Minish Cap Player's Guide (Paperback)
The game, The Legend of Zelda: Minish Cap, while not difficult to play, is one full of secrets and hidden items, and it's nearly impossible to find every separate item without some sort of help, or if you have oodles of time on your hands in which to stare at the tiny Gameboy Advance screen. So, if you're picking up the game and you're time-starved, then I'd definitely recommend the guide to go with it.

First off (and this is the reason why I give it only four stars), it starts out with the basic game tutorial, essentially the repeat of the in-game booklet, but after that short section, it gets right into the adventure, and details as you go where to find every item that can be obtained at that time. It also details every boss fight and how best to handle the puzzles along the way.

The appendix, like in all strategy guides, is where the money you spent (or will spend) goes. In this guide, it shows the location of every heart piece and in what order they should be obtained. It also has a section for Kinstone pairings and when you should locate the pairing and fuse Kinstones, an essential section, I think, as some things can actually be missed if you wait to long to fuse. After that is a section for sword techniques, and this also tells when you can obtain each separate one, and how to find the masters who teach these techniques. Though not important, it has two pages dedicated to figurine collecting as well, such as how best to obtain Mysterious Shells and a checklist of sorts to cross off all of those you may have collected.

I won't, however, recommend this book to game purists, as it does have quite a few spoilers in it. And if you actually like the endless exploration and finding the things yourself, then I'd also stay clear of this. Otherwise, pick this guide up if you have the game and want to complete it in one go.
