The Best Guide,
By Bob (somewhere) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Official Nintendo Pokemon Emerald Player's Guide (Paperback)
This guide is the best ever. It has information about every item including berries and poke balls. It has a list of all the pokemon in aphabetical order AND by number. It has checklists, maps, tips, and when there is going to be a gym battle or an important battle it says what pokemon, what level, and what attacks the opponent will have. This guide tells you everything, but you don't feel that your cheeting.

Waste of your money. Buy the Prima Guide,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Official Nintendo Pokemon Emerald Player's Guide (Paperback)
This guide has no detail at all.
In this guide, they give you one caption on important things, but the Prima Guide gives a whole page on the same thing. For example, this guide tells you where the items are in Victory Road. It has three pictures of Victory Road but does not tell you how to get through the Victory Road cave. I dont get why they would tell you were the items are when you don't know how to get them, it's just moronic. Furthermore, they do not in anyway tell you where to catch any of the pokemon except for Rayquaza. This guide gives you the title of the pokemon's ability, but it doesnt explain what the ability does. It does not tell you what the pokemon is weak or strong against. The Prima Guide is the way to go.

This Item isn't too bad.,
By Aphole "Aphole" (MCalifornia) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Official Nintendo Pokemon Emerald Player's Guide (Paperback)
This is a very good buy if the person playing the game hasn't beaten the main story. If you just buy it to beat the Frontier or fill the pokedex you better not buy it at all. Id just buy it used if at all. Never buy it new if you beat the main story.
The main cons are: Frequent miss-spellings/example -(they spelled potions, pations) Pages come off because ofteh poor book bindings It only has the Hoenn POkedex info no Fire Red and Leaf Green Monsters.

Guides used to be better,

This review is from: Official Nintendo Pokemon Emerald Player's Guide (Paperback)
Of course it has a walktrough, but it's not clear, for example:
*Spoilers* When you get to Rustboro City, the guide tells you to do everything you need to do, but, it doesn't tell you what to do next. In fact the next page in the guide tells you to go to route 103, but in fact you have to get back through the forest and take the ship to Dewford Town, this has to be realized by you, the guide doesn't tell you. And, past guides, used to tell you even which Pokemon the trainers had, but now they don't; not even in the gyms, they just tell you the Pokemons that the Gym Leaders have */end of Spoilers* Anyway, it's a good guide, if you want to have somehthing in your hands; if you don't find something in the guide, you can make a quick search on internet.

Yes it's true that you can get all this information on the web. However, since my 9 year old has had access to Nintendo platforms (GBA, DS, Gamecube) we find that giving the game WITH the appropriate guide leads to more READING!!! And how can you complain about that? I don't actually play the games but I can tell you that in this age group (about 6-9) I find that the boys are definitely into utilizing the guides and as the teachers at the local grammar school say, any reading that piques their interest is good.
