5.0 out of 5 stars Great to Give You a Leg Up, April 10, 2007
This review is from: Official Nintendo Super Paper Mario Player's Guide (Paperback)
Whenever Nintendo comes out with a game, you can be sure Nintendo Power will have a guide. They make some of the best guides in the business, although they always seem to have little problems with them. Their Super Paper Mario guide is no exception, but it's still a pretty useful tool for those wanting to conquer the game and find everything there is to be found.

Super Paper Mario has a ton of stuff to be found throughout the adventure. There are so many hidden secrets and passages. Going at it on your own can be tough. Luckily, this guide is a savior in the places where you're stuck. It's got detailed maps, all the puzzle solutions, and it isn't really all that difficult to use either.

The guide begins, like most of them do these days, with the game basics, which is more or less a rehash of what's in your instruction manual. However, the guide also provides advanced tips that aren't in your manual, and some of them are pretty helpful. Granted, there's nothing in this section that you can't (or won't) figure out on your own, but it makes the guide handy for beginning gamers as well as expert gamers. After that we get into the characters and their skills, and then into the Pixls. These descriptions of your characters and Pixls are pretty brief, but a guide doesn't have to go on and on for pages and pages about something so simple. Nintendo Power gets right to the point.

Afterwards we get into the walkthrough which is written in Nintendo Power's tried and true formula. If you've been using Nintendo Power guides for a while then you know what I mean. Each area has an introduction, a map, and the maps of course are decorated. Showing you what's in every box, where every item is etc. Neat. They also continue to use the point by point system that seems to have worked in their guides for years. By that I mean, you'll see a "1" marked on the map. Now find "1" in the text and read what it says you need to be doing at that location. It's fairly simple and straightforward to use. Likewise, the guide is made easier to use than previous guides. If you really just don't feel like reading for when you should flip, the guide will show you on the maps as indicated by a blue box (as well as a point). The walkthrough also provides you with a pull out map of Flipside, although it's inserted in a rather awkward place. If there were any criticism of the walkthrough it'd be that once again, the boss strategies seem lacking. The guide gives you a great offense, but like many Nintendo Power guides, it lacks in giving you a strong defense. Most bosses, however, aren't hard to figure out. The screenshots throughout the guide are also crystal clear, and they're taken in 16:9 mode, in case you're wondering (not that that really makes a big difference if you're playing 4:3). They accurately depict everything. On the whole, the walkthrough for this guide is just about perfect. It doesn't waste time, and it gets right to point.

There are more goodies after the walkthrough. There's a list of all the items, recipes and cards you can collect. Under the cards section is where you'll find stats for each and every enemy you'll encounter in the game. They also go into detail on all the treasure maps you can buy in flipside, as well as the pit of 100 trials. Finally there's "Other Things to Do," which is more or less just more secrets that detail about the games mini-games. It's all neatly organized and neatly packaged.

Nintendo Power doesn't mess around. They don't explain anymore than they need to, but like all their guides, it requires a lot of the reader too. By that I mean you'll spend a lot of time page flipping between the maps and points. Luckily, as I said, Nintendo Power gets down to business and most of the details listed in the points aren't long. Still, I think it's about time Nintendo Power started making their guides a little easier to navigate. In some of the later stages of the game, it can be easy to lose your place on the map.

It's a great guide. The perfect guide. It just has little shortcomings. Still, if you need a good guide to Super Paper Mario, you might as well make it this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT guide!, September 22, 2007

This review is from: Official Nintendo Super Paper Mario Player's Guide (Paperback)
My son loves his new Wii (and all of his other Nintendo gaming)and along with every game he loves to get a guide. While some of his friends say they won't use them as "cheats" he finds that he gets more out of the game finding "secret codes" and such that let him do more. We don't feel it's a cheat in any way, just a great compliment to make the games more fun. The plus is that it means is doing more reading than he would if he were just playing the games and for young kids, reading is always a great thing, especially when they are very interested in the material. We have bought MANY of these Nintendo Guides and they are all GREAT!

This Strategy Guide is very handy for making the most out of the experience of playing Super Paper Mario (which is itself a 5-Star+ game). Some sections of the game would be nearly impossible to navigate without the maps inside the guide.

3.0 out of 5 stars A helpful guide with minor issues, February 10, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Official Nintendo Super Paper Mario Player's Guide (Paperback)
The Super Paper Mario official Nintendo Power guide is a useful tool for completing your inter dimensional adventure. With so many secret paths and hidden items, you might eventually begin to feel overwhelmed. I would say that this guide in general is comprehensive enough to get the job done, but offers nothing too spectacular. It is just a straight forward strategy guide which offers full colored maps with locations of items followed by general descriptions of said item to find where needed. Most of the walk through consists of minor details of the more noticeable points of your journey. It won't wow you but at least you'll not feel lost. In terms of difficulty, Super Paper Mario really isn't too great a challenge as you'll find Mario will become undoubtedly superior to the enemy in no time at all as he begins to level up. And the puzzles offered in many of the stages are just common since. This is why you'll feel like the walk through is a little underwhelming to say the least. The crux of all this guides' good information can be found near the back of the book, where a detailed listing of all the in game items, secrets, and recipes can be found. This source of info is negligible to a casual gamer who could care less for finding 100% of everything. And if you are just a casual gamer, I recommend really staying away from this one considering the lack of difficulty altogether. For a completest freak, it is an adequate enough manual. WARNING! There are a few major disappointments to be found here however. It's located in what should be a bestiary, but what has been converted into a catch card/bestiary sort of combination. Their efforts seem largely lackluster as all that you'll find is the enemy names and their respective card numbers. No enemy location data in case you might want to reference that in order to actually "catch" it's card. And no strength/weakness info either. As a matter of fact...no details are ever given on how to effectively battle the enemy types, leaving the player on their own to guess your own strategy. Only bosses are detailed in depth. Furthermore the maps can be jarring from time to time considering the way it needs to be laid out due to the 2-D/3-D aspect of the game, and the items found in both modes. This can be especially frustrating in the later stages where the levels themselves pan out and become massive and more complex. The maps are all crunched together in some pages, forcing you to have to scan a little harder to find your location.

3.0 out of 5 stars A LOT of pictures - LITTLE DESCRIPTION. [warning: some "cheat" spoilers], December 29, 2010
This review is from: Official Nintendo Super Paper Mario Player's Guide (Paperback)
Like it's predecessors, Super Paper Mario Wii has a ton of stuff to be found throughout the adventure. There are many hidden platforms, passages, treasures, and secret rooms. Like the instruction manual; the Nintendo Power Guide begins with an introduction to the game it's characters, - then delivers what the manual doesn't: advanced tips:
Each character has five special acrobatic moves that you can trigger by stylishly tilting the controller after you bounce off an enemy.

Nintendo Power makes some of the best guides in the business, but they aren't without fault and this guide is not an exception. For such a long game it really is a short guide, my previous Paper Mario guides were much longer and much more detailed. Detailed how? Each Area has an introduction, and maps of the course which are just pictures (screenshots) of the course stage by stage. Very little text supplements each course. The maps are decorated showing you when to flip, what is in every box, where every item is- and the screen shots are crystal clear. However, the maps are confusing to follow: A to B to C to ... wait how did I get to M? With so little text to support the walkthrough -you may find yourself starring at the walkthrough instead of playing and enjoying the game. Something positive that I found was that passwords and codes were always included; although usually in a screen shot that sometimes was hard to read.

Another reviewer mentioned and you may also agree that (along with the lack of supportive text) is a lack of boss strategies. The guide gives an offense but fails in suggesting a defense. If you've mastered your characters & your Pixls (there are 13 total!) you won't be in any trouble though the bosses aren't that difficult to beat, especially compared to the previous two games.

Also every chapter map refers to a MAIN MAP; a pull-out map of flipside & flopside (inserted in the most annoying place) which has all of the items and catch cards marked on it.
BE FOREWARNED: if you purchase this walkthrough USED make sure that you contact the seller and confirm that the pull-out map is still attached to the book; otherwise essential information will be lost to you; like where to find recipe cards for Saffron's & Dylli's restaurants, items, secret treasure, hidden platforms, pipes, and catch cards.

The most useful part of the book (aside the pull-out map) is the appendix where you will find a list of all the items, recipes, and catch cards you can collect.

Catch cards are more than just collectibles you can sell: they power up your attacks. Each time you collect an enemy's card, you'll double your attack strength against that enemy. Collecting multiple cards will increase your attack power even more. Of course, if you are short on coin you can sell them to "The Fondest Hopes" Card Shop in Flopside, where you can also buy catch cards. To access The card shop in Flopside: go to Flipside First Floor: go to the right of the screen & turn 3-D next to the fountain, go through the wall & turn 2-D and you will be in Flopside.

Under the cards section is where you'll find stats for each and every enemy you'll encounter in the game, but no strategy on how to beat them. They also go into detail on all the treasure maps you can buy in flipside, as well as the pit of 100 trials. Finally there's "Other Things to Do," which is more or less just more secrets with details about mini games and if you read carefully directions on how to get to secret areas; example: Enter the Beveragarium in Flipside B1, then flip to 3-d to find the backroom, take the pipe down to the arcade. Another secret: visit "Overthere" in Flopside and flip to 3-D to enter the back room, here you will find a chest with a gold card, use this card to open the "Hammer Whacker" game back at the arcade.

Obviously, this book has some secrets that you wouldn't find on your own, and if you don't want your child using the internet; it's a good book to help them complete the game as there are several levels where you do get stuck and need a little help. For the Adult hardcore gamer: Is this going to tell you anything you can't find on game faqs? Well, it might make it easier to see where those recipe cards are: AS LONG AS YOU GET A COPY THAT STILL HAS THE FOLD-OUT MAP IN IT.

This (Out of Print) Guide isn't worth the ridiculous prices I've seen it going for $ 34-
$ 54 unless you *REALLY* want to get every single item; AND THEN YOUR COPY BETTER HAVE A MAP IN IT!

Don't forget: flip often: more dimensions = more money!

5.0 out of 5 stars Very detailed., January 24, 2010
By
H. Mayson (PORTLAND, OR USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Official Nintendo Super Paper Mario Player's Guide (Paperback)
Of all the Nintendo strategy guides, I found this strategy guide to be the most detailed and specific of them all. The strategy guide tells you where to go to find all the items and gives you excellent maps of all the levels. It tells you which character will be best suited to take on which boss and where to use each pixie. If there is code needed, you can find it in the strategy guide.

I have been mainly using this strategy guide so I can stay ahead of my nephew who doesn't want me to be him on this game. If you want to make this game a easier to when you play, use of this strategy guide.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Walk Through, January 11, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Official Nintendo Super Paper Mario Player's Guide (Paperback)
Santa brought this book for my son for Christmas along with the Super Paper Mario game for Wii. He has read through it over and over and has had a ton of fun playing the game.
As with the other Official Player's Guides, this book walks you through all the stages and lets you know of all the secret places and hidden items. It describes enemies and helps in a pinch when you are stuck and don't know what else to do.
I don't like to look at it unless I am really stuck and don't feel like backtracking again. My son likes to know everything as he plays so that he doesn't miss anything.
I think having some inside information makes the game more fun.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simple and effective guide., April 12, 2008
This review is from: Official Nintendo Super Paper Mario Player's Guide (Paperback)
This guide is easy to follow and has all of the information you will need to complete the game. It is organized well, and the layout is fine. One of the biggest questions, I think, is whether or not you will really need a guide for this game. If you are more of a casual gamer who just wants to complete the main game and some of the more interesting optional parts, you may not need this. I really had very little difficulty with the main storyline - only the bonus dungeons gave me some trouble. If you want to collect everything and complete everything, this will definitely come in handy. Super Paper Mario isn't one of the tougher games I've played, and I think many people would have no trouble finishing it without a guide. But, I like to follow guides for most of the longer adventure games I play, and this one was worth using.
