Book Description

August 28, 2003
This sourcebook has been created for patients who have decided to make education and Internet-based research an integral part of the treatment process. Although it gives information useful to doctors, caregivers and other health professionals, it also tells patients where and how to look for information covering virtually all topics related to osteoarthritis, from the essentials to the most advanced areas of research. The title of this book includes the word official. This reflects the fact that the sourcebook draws from public, academic, government, and peer-reviewed research. Selected readings from various agencies are reproduced to give you some of the latest official information available to date on osteoarthritis. Following an introductory chapter, the sourcebook is organized into three parts. PART I: THE ESSENTIALS; Chapter 1. The Essentials on Osteoarthritis: Guidelines; Chapter 2. Seeking Guidance; Chapter 3. Clinical Trials and Osteoarthritis; PART II: ADDITIONAL RESOURCES AND ADVANCED MATERIAL; Chapter 4. Studies on Osteoarthritis; Chapter 5. Patents on Osteoarthritis; Chapter 6. Books on Osteoarthritis; Chapter 7. Multimedia on Osteoarthritis; Chapter 8. Periodicals and News on Osteoarthritis; Chapter 9. From the Publisher

This book has been created for patients who have decided to make education and research an integral part of the treatment process. Although it also gives information useful to doctors, caregivers and other health professionals, it tells patients where and how to look for information covering virtually all topics related to osteoarthritis (also Arthrosis; Degenerative joint disease; Hypertrophic osteoarthritis; Osteoarthrosis), from the essentials to the most advanced areas of research. The title of this book includes the word official. This reflects the fact that the sourcebook draws from public, academic, government, and peer-reviewed research. Selected readings from various agencies are reproduced to give you some of the latest official information available to date on osteoarthritis. Given patients' increasing sophistication in using the Internet, abundant references to reliable Internet-based resources are provided throughout this sourcebook. Where possible, guidance is provided on how to obtain free-of-charge, primary research results as well as more detailed information via the Internet. E-book and electronic versions of this sourcebook are fully interactive with each of the Internet sites mentioned (clicking on a hyperlink automatically opens your browser to the site indicated). Hard-copy users of this sourcebook can type cited Web addresses directly into their browsers to obtain access to the corresponding sites. In addition to extensive references accessible via the Internet, chapters include glossaries of technical or uncommon terms.

Though many physicians and public officials had thought that the emergence of the Internet would do much to assist patients in obtaining reliable information, in March 2001 the National Institutes of Health issued the following warning: "The number of Web sites offering" health-related resources grows every day. Many sites provide valuable information, while others may have information that is unreliable or misleading." Since the late 1990s, physicians have seen a general increase in patient Internet usage rates. Patients frequently enter their doctor's offices with printed Web pages of home remedies in the guise of latest medical research. This scenario is so common that doctors often spend more time dispelling misleading information than guiding patients through sound therapies. ... This book has been created for patients who have decided to make education and research an integral part of the treatment process. ... While this sourcebook covers osteoarthritis, your doctor, research publications, and specialists may refer to your condition using a variety of terms. Therefore, you should understand that osteoarthritis is often considered a synonym or a condition closely related to the following: Arthrosis; Degenerative joint disease; Hypertrophic osteoarthritis; Osteoarthrosis.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good for older patients, April 27, 2006
This review is from: The Official Patient's Sourcebook on Osteoarthritis: A Revised and Updated Directory for the Internet Age (Paperback)
Found the book to be perfect for my parents who are a bit shy of the internet. One was recently affected and wanted to start researching osteoarthritis, and this book put them in the right direction and made it easy. I would not recommend the book to someone who wants a basic understanding of the affliction (this is easy enough on search engines), but someone who want to know everything and know where to find it (trials, new inventions, etc.). It makes most sense to someone new to the disease and researching a medical topic.

1.0 out of 5 stars Waste of money, October 28, 2003

This review is from: The Official Patient's Sourcebook on Osteoarthritis: A Revised and Updated Directory for the Internet Age (Paperback)
This whole series of books is garbage. The information in the books is copied verbatim from health sites anyone can get for FREE on the internet. If you think it is bad when college students cut and paste information into their term papers, what do you think of cutting and pasting an entire book from the internet and then charging people a lot of money for it? I think it is a scam and the M.D. and Ph.D. who put their names on the cover should have their degrees revoked.

Don't waste your money on these books. You would be much better off going to a reliable health portal on the internet.
