4.0 out of 5 stars Great book for getting started with Red Hat 8.0, November 27, 2002
By
"dpwall" (AL, United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Official Red Hat Linux User's Guide (Paperback)
Red Hat 8.0 is a very good first attempt at the desktop OS market by Red Hat. This book looks like a collection of some of the excellent documentation from Red Hats web site. It covers basic installation and use well. For more advanced use you will have to look elsewhere(It couldn't tell me how to setup power management on my laptop). The book concentrates heavily on using Gnome, but has an appendix on using KDE. The section on using the command line interface (CLI) is a good introduction for beginners. I would recommend this book for someone who was interested in trying Red Hat Linux. Then after gaining some experience they could move to a more advanced Linux/Unix book. This book and CD set is a great deal if you are not able to download the CD image and documentation from Red Hat, or if you prefer printed manuals.

4.0 out of 5 stars A very good book for Linux self-learner, December 29, 2002
This review is from: Official Red Hat Linux User's Guide (Paperback)
I am a novice in Linux. At the beginning, I feel this book is too expensive to buy. The other Chinese version of the Linux textbooks [are lower-priced]. However, I choose this one finally, because some of them are too simple and the other are too difficult for beginners.

This offical guide points out a lot of examples for you. You can follow the examples and learn the concept immediately. Moreover the authors use the simple English to explain the difficult idea. I haven't used the dictionary during my studying. You do not feel tired after studying and can start your Linux job at once. Some of IT text books are too thick like Microsoft Press - Exchange Server 2000 and you will forget part of your learning in the last chapter.

If necessary, I will try to buy the same series of Linux text books later. If the price can lower, I think it is a good news for all users.

This review is from: Official Red Hat Linux User's Guide (Paperback)
The red hat users guide is well written but for beginers it would seem like a foriegn language but after you get the hang of this operating system you will begin to undertand more and more about the things in this book me personally i had trouble for many years keeping my microsoft windows applications working new viruses were coming out everday there platform was just to unstable and it got to the point to were i was either going to have to buy another windows product for hundreads of dollars that would fail or i could buy a new operating system for next to nothing , sure i would have to learn new software but its worth it in the end to have a more stable system the only thing i really had trouble with was getting an internet connection and working with the KPPP but with this books help i can set up internet connections over the phone with any provider within a few minutes with ease this is a great guide for any first time user or exsisting users
