Tired of the rat race? The relentless striving to be Number One? Then why not use the Power of Low Expectations and explore the possibilities of settling for Number Two by being a Sidekick?

That is the premise of this often though not always hilarious book that celebrates the critical entertainment role of the Sidekick while pretending to offer advice about becoming one in real life. Written by a couple of Cowboy Humorists, Too Slim, bassist of the music and comedy group Riders in the Sky and Texas Bix Bender, well known Western humorist and philosopher, it is chock full of information about what a sidekick is... and isn't. For example a sidekick is neither a worthless coward nor a lazy lie-abed (though the confusion is understandable); neither is he (or she) an Accomplice, a Lackey, a Minion, or a Henchman. A sidekick is above the level of a faceless, nameless member of the Posse but below that of a true Ally (and largely free of the responsibilities of either). Sidekick Salutes celebrate the work of "real" sidekicks: Patrick Star, Gabby Hayes, Bob Denver, Chewbacca, Kato and Cato (the Funny Kato), Fred and Ethel, Barney Fife, etc. while Role Models & Inspirations feature imaginary sidekicks from history created expressly for this book (frankly, many of these are less than funny). Drawings by James Hough clearly illustrate the difference between sidekick and non-sidekick appearance and behavior. Chapters detail the various steps to successful sidekick-hood like locating a suitable hero, the delicate art of ingratiation, the difference between a buddy's support and Aiding and Abetting, and the nuances of attaching yourself to a new hero when, despite your lack of effort, something bad happens to your old hero.
