5.0 out of 5 stars Who Scored Highest ? How did MY best scores compare ?

3.0 out of 5 stars A book of scores - but more stories would be welcomed., July 15, 1998
This review is from: Official Video Game & Pinball Book Of World Records(Out of Print) (Paperback)
I picked the book up thinking it was just a list of arcade game scores - but the author chose to also include scores for home video game systems as well. Since the focus of the recollections at the end of the book were about arcade games, a separate book for home systems would be more appropriate. A majority of the entries are for Nintendo systems, which were provided by Nintendo itself, and some are carried out to the top 250 scores. Surely the top 10 would have been plenty. On the plus side are the 200 pages of stories from the Golden Age of arcades. This is the highlight of the book, and despite the author getting a bit self-important at times, makes for very entertaining reading for those of us who were there. If you were an arcade junkie in the early 80's, you may get a kick out of it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Looking forward to the next edition, January 30, 2004

G.Hawkins (Wellington, New Zealand) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Official Video Game & Pinball Book Of World Records(Out of Print) (Paperback)
As the title says, the book is the authoritative collection of records on video games & pinball. As well as arcade machines this includes home computer systems, consoles, and arcade emulation (MAME, specifically). Unfortunately the main problem with this book now is its incompleteness: it's now several years old and somewhat out of date. (See the Twin Galaxies website for a searchable database of all today's records.) An updated and expanded edition is meant to be on its way.

The book makes up for it with a special section on "The Golden Age of Video Games" which recounts the early history of Twin Galaxies and the growth of video gaming in the 80's as a 'sport'. I thought the book took itself a little too seriously here. This section also tells the story of the That's Incredible video game competition, organized by Twin Galaxies, which many people reading this may remember watching on TV.

[As an aside: A clip of this is actually downloadable from the Twin Galaxies website. It's great 80's nostalgia, and listening to the hosts' earnest commentary of the players is sheer camp hilarity! Best Line: "He piles on the pepper and sends down a bun covered with hotdogs and an egg for his four thousand points!"]

The book also includes a detailed section on the TG rules and how to get yourself in the book. I'm looking forward to the next edition being an even thicker book, with records for many more games - not least for MAME!

Between the records themselves, the nostalgic look at the "Golden Age" of gaming, and the historical account of how TwinGalaxies came to be, this is a MUST READ for any video gamer, new and old.

Plus, you can find out how YOUR scores compare to the best players in the world, and how YOU can possibly have YOUR score submitted for inclusion in next year's edition.

HIGHLY recommended !!

5.0 out of 5 stars The definitive source for high-scores & a great read, too!, February 15, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Official Video Game & Pinball Book Of World Records(Out of Print) (Paperback)
Walter Day has really struck gold with this definitive reference book of videogame & pinball world records. Video arcades and game players everywhere now look to this book for information on world record scores, video game contests & delightfully fresh perspectives on the videogame industry. It's not just a list of scores, though. Of particular interest is the fascinating 200 page story in the back of the book, which chronicles Twin Galaxies very significant part in the Golden Age of videogames in the 1980's. This book is sure to become an annual institution in arcades and videogame players libraries all over the world. I look forward to making this a yearly purchase & can't wait to read the rest of the story!

5.0 out of 5 stars So many high scores for all the best games..., July 25, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Official Video Game & Pinball Book Of World Records(Out of Print) (Paperback)
The Twin Galaxies record book is one of a kind and a must-have for true videogame enthusiasts. For years, Walter's done a fantastic job of compiling videogame and pinball records, and finally collecting them in a book was a great idea. There is so much to read over and so many scores to try and beat, I could really never tire of this book. I only hope to achieve some winning scores so that I can be included in the next edition!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent score reference book with stories too., March 3, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Official Video Game & Pinball Book Of World Records(Out of Print) (Paperback)
This is an excellent score reference book. Well organized, it covers high scores from arcade games as well as home systems and more. This book has scores dating back to early 80's from the beginning of the "golden age of video games". In addition, there are great stories at the back of the book telling stories of score collecting/verifying and highlights several "video game heroes" of the golden age. Also included are the settings required on all games and a section on how to get your own scores in the next addition. A must have book for high scorers and those interested in reading about the golden age of video games!

5.0 out of 5 stars The most comprehensive book on video games scores to date, February 17, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Official Video Game & Pinball Book Of World Records(Out of Print) (Paperback)
Walter has gone out and collected more scores than people knew of games. Classics not only from the arcade, but a varied assortment of pinball scores and home videogame from just about every system known the man and woman, too! Who wouldn't want their score to be recorded in such a compendium of elite players. I am tempted to get that roll of quarters and go for the record to see my name in the book. The surprise included in this book is the story of organized video game competition, which is unknown to many people and now the story has been told in a personal way by the man who helped to establish the world's most famous scoreboard for the video and pinball establishment.

This review is from: Official Video Game & Pinball Book Of World Records(Out of Print) (Paperback)
I like to congratulate Walter Day on his achievement. This book is exactly what the video game world needed. Finally, a book that tells about the history of video games from the very beginning of the golden age to the present .Also, a complete listing of high scores and contest scores that helps complete this amazing book. I strongly recommend this book to anyone and everyone that enjoys playing video and pinball games. I should know, I my self have been competing in video games for twenty years now and hold several world records. Congatulations again Walter, I look forward to more in the future.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best literature about video games to date!, February 16, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Official Video Game & Pinball Book Of World Records(Out of Print) (Paperback)
This book is a must have for any gamer. Just imagine a book that lists the top players along with their scores from over 12,000 players in 31 differant countries. From arcade scores to turbografx scores this book has it all. While I bought this book just to see the scores that I could beat, the added 200 pages in the back of the book was even better. A great story about the early 80's. I can't wait to see the next edition of the book with more Playstation and Saturn scores. A must buy for under $20.
