Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Say you know only a little bit about Extensible Markup Language (XML). You know what it is, generally, and some of the roles it plays in software. You don't, however, feel ready to do real work with it. The Official XMLSPY Handbook fits your requirements brilliantly by simultaneously introducing you to XML and XMLSPY, which is one of the most popular tools for generating, editing, and analyzing XML documents. Certain aspects of theory that you'd get from a standards-based XML book (XML in a Nutshell is one of the best) fail to appear in this practical guide for programmers, but then it's rare to win a contract because you know the standards documents exclusively.

Practical from page one, author Larry Kim begins with a quick introduction to the mechanics of XMLSPY 5 (which appears in 90-day full-featured demo form on the companion CD-ROM), then explores the software's features--which happen to coincide with XML's handiest capabilities--one by one. Though the graphics are sometimes small and grainy, Kim does an admirable job of explaining how XML and its related technologies work, and especially how XMLSPY fits into the practical picture. The reader is left wanting only one significant feature: information on how to design XML into applications, not just implement it. That's a big subject, though, and one that might best be left for Kim's next book. --David Wall

Topics covered: Extensible Markup Language (XML), Extensible Stylesheet Language (XSL), XSL Transformations (XSLT), Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP), Web Services Definition Language (WSDL), and how all of these interact with Altova's XMLSPY development environment. You'll learn how to manipulate XML and its variations in XMLSPY, and get a bit of background on how each works.

1.0 out of 5 stars This is an unnecessary book, February 17, 2003
By
Erik Siegel (Groningen, The Netherlands) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Official XMLSPY Handbook (Paperback)
I don't feel tempted to write a review very often but for this book I do. It is a warning: Don't buy this book. There are an awfull lot of better books about XML, XML Schema's and XSLT around (try Wrox) and the book doesn't tell you anything about XML spy (which is a great product!) that you can't find out with an hour or so of clicking around and trying the features.
More important: It doesn't even mention the more interesting features of XML Spy that do seem to require a manual: Extending the product by writing macro's for instance or this Authentic stuff.
For me, unfortunately, it was a waste of time and money.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for learning XML and XMLSPY at the same time, January 23, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: The Official XMLSPY Handbook (Paperback)
When it comes to reference books for XML and related standards, the "Essential XML Quick Reference" by Aaron Skonnard, Martin Gudgin, et. al. (ISBN 0201740958), has been a favorite of mine for the longest time - but the lack of a good introductory book that teaches XML basics, XSLT, XML Schema, and even WSDL from the ground up was a continuous source of frustration for me.
But not anymore! With the "XMLSPY Handbook" Larry Kim has created just that: a comprehensive book that explains XML, Namespaces, XSLT, XPath, XML Schema, SOAP, and WSDL using a wide array of relevant examples - and at the same time uses these to introduce the various features of XMLSPY, one of the most popular XML development environments, which incidentally makes learning XML a lot easier.
The CD that comes with the book also includes a 90-day eval of the full-blown "bells and whistles" enterprise version of the software, which gives ample time to go through all the examples provided and try everything out yourself.

5.0 out of 5 stars CD Rom Issue Resolution, March 7, 2003
This review is from: The Official XMLSPY Handbook (Paperback)
We regret than an error occurred in the first printing of the XMLSPY Handbook, and these copies contained the wrong CD-ROM. We immediately recalled these copies, and redistributed a new printing with the corrected CD.

However, a small number of the first printing may still be in circulation.

If you happen to have purchased a copy of XMLSPY Handbook which contained the wrong CD ROM, we apologize for the error, and are happy to replace it for you, at no charge.
