Recently the AICPA has endorsed a training program geared to teach it membership (US accountants) how to use business structures available only by going "offshore". In an attempt to review information available on this subject in the popular media, I found this book.

Mr Neal does a good job of teaching that while tax reduction should not be your PRIMARY reason for going offshore, that there are still many tax benifits available by doing so. Also that there is no better asset protection available than a properly, legally organized offshore corporation.

From a professional point of view, this is a great introduction for successful business people interested in a facinating new world of opportunities.

1.0 out of 5 stars One-sided approach--discusses benefits but conceals risks, February 18, 1999
By
This review is from: The Offshore Advantage: Privacy, Asset Protection, Tax Shelters, Offshore Banking & Investing- Why & How (Hardcover)
The book is promotional in nature, with very little substance in terms of "strategy" and analogy (probably because the author, who also owns the publishing company, is constantly encouraging the reader to contact his own offshore consulting entities to purchase additional services).

Thus, the reader should be cautious before investing offshore: how are his funds protected? what regulatory agencies will assist when funds disappear? And what about litigation laws... they can actually backfire!

In summary, the author, Terry Neal, spends a lot of time promoting the idea of shelter from the IRS and SEC, but fails to mention that he himself is under investigation by IRS and SEC!

1.0 out of 5 stars A Total Waste of Time & Money, November 14, 2000

Just do a search on the internet and you'll have more information than this sales pitch has to offer and save money. Seldom have I seen such a worthless book.

Neal does gives a no nonsense approach to asset protection, on and offshore. He gives you all the information you need to open up your offshore structure, along with phone numbers and addresses. If you have any interest in asset protection this book is a fabulous start.

1.0 out of 5 stars a waste of time, September 13, 1999

This book is not worth the time it takes to read. It is nothing but a long sales pitch for consulting services, which (surprise!) the author would be more than happy to provide.

Which makes one wonder where the glowing reviews come from...

3.0 out of 5 stars US vs. Offshore Accounts, February 20, 2001

Mr. Neal has four sections, the last one being an appendix. His first section talks about "The Problem": global thinking, the legal threats to assets and privacy, banking and the Federal Reserve. It was interesting to read about how our information and assets are open to the public and government. Mr. Neal wanted to describe how this open information is a threat to our assets, funds, privacy and well-being.
His second section talks about "Decisive information": writes mainly about offshore trends, answers to frequently asked questions, fraudulent transfers and the ultimate question of who should go offshore.
His third section explains the various strategies of offshore banking: privacy, dealing with your offshore bank, etc. On chapter 16 it has a directory of offshore banks. Included with the names of the various offshore banks are brief descriptions of their locations, advantages, disadvantages and information about opening an account.
I gave this book a three star rating because I found the books content to be very descriptive on the issues within the United States (governments, privacy, taxation, fund accumulation, etc.) and not enough information on how to take action and implement.
Have fun reading!

This review is from: The Offshore Advantage: Privacy, Asset Protection, Tax Shelters, Offshore Banking & Investing- Why & How (Hardcover)
After reviewing a number of other books on the offshore industry, I was delighted to discover the Offshore Advantage. Written from the point of view of a business man instead of an attorney, the book offered useful information and intriguing answers to my questions. Strong recommendation.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great place to start, June 3, 1999

This review is from: The Offshore Advantage: Privacy, Asset Protection, Tax Shelters, Offshore Banking & Investing- Why & How (Hardcover)
Having read Terry Neal's wonderful book, I have begun looking into how "going offshore" might work for me. There are a number of other books, magazines, and authors, mentioned in Neal's book which I have also looked into. It seems the more things I read and the more industry professionals that I speak to, Terry Neal keeps coming up as a knowledgable expert in the offshore field. As a matter of fact, many of the periodicals and E-newsletters that deal with offshore are giving great reviews to "The Offshore Advantage".

I believe that I have learned from one of the best teachers in this industry. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in this subject.

If you want to learn about the basics of "offshore", then this is the right place for you. A fun and interesting look at why so many are taking their money and heading for warmer climbs. The Offshore Advantage is a great beginners guide but also includes a helpful appendix of industry contacts around the world. I liked it a lot.
