Editorial Reviews

From the Actor

This program goes hand-in-hand with our title "Using Single Sideband," that teaches everything you need to know for operating this most useful communication device - also available from Amazon.com (Amazon item number 1882629310).

Product Description

At one time or another, every boater usually entertains the idea of sailing off into the sunset, away from boss, bills, troubles and everything else that there is to get away from. But very few actually get to do that.

In this program, you will get to meet several sailors who have actually done it. One of them (Dan Byrne) completed the BOC single-handed around-the-world race, while others shown have just gone to sea and done mere ocean crossings.

Added to the experiences and horror stories they relate, there are demonstrations of many items like Exposure Suits, Solar Stills, Desalinator, Provisioning, Spare Parts, Medical Kit, Life Rafts, Harnesses, Jack Lines and much more.

After watching this program, you’ll have a much better idea of what it takes to prepare for a cruise – whether it be just for a week-end, or around the world. Getting you, your crew and your vessel ready to go offshore may be the most important task you ever take on, because your life may depend on how well you do it.

This review is from: Offshore Cruising Guide, #304 [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This video is a total waste of money. Given that the topic is obviously geared more toward sailors with some experience (as opposed to beginners), it's frankly insulting. Most of the footage consists of some guy in dark sunglasses and a silly hat sitting in the cockpit of a boat rambling on and on. There is very little actual footage of anything being done, any gear being used, or anything else useful. The actual monologue (occasionally a dialog) consists largely of vague generalizations. The "experts" consulted are sorely lacking. For example, the individual who "explains" a windvane has apparently never used one, and appears not to have a full understanding of how they actually work. He informs us of things like, "They tell me these are very nice to have." Great. The narrator himself appears not to have much knowledge or experience, as he does things like confusing harness tethers for "jacklines." The "interview" with Dan Byrne is ridiculous. The poor guy is obviously bored and annoyed at the stupid questions he is being asked. The section on food includes a reminder of how great freeze-dried dinners are, with an absurdly long silent section with two people sitting in a cockpit eating them (yum yum). In all, this video contained almost nothing of any interest or use. You'll be much better served. J. Mark Lane NY
