Book Description

December 6, 2002
Success in any yacht race depends to a large degree on the ability of the crew to perform any boat-handling manoeuvre faultlessly and speedily. This book explains the evolution of just about every situation that is likely to be encountered during a race at sea. Each one is appraised with an overview of the sequence that should take place and its objective, then the task of each crew member is explained for the preparation, operation and completion. The author has sailed in four Admiral's Cup series and has acted as the British team manager.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good write up of sailing tasks, March 25, 2009
This review is from: The Offshore Race Crew's Manual (Hardcover)
However, I would have liked more about the Navigator's duty and activities and more general tips on boat prep and operation.

5.0 out of 5 stars Moving from Little Boats to Big Boats, May 12, 2010

This review is from: The Offshore Race Crew's Manual (Hardcover)
A sailor we know has a 40' sloop and is thinking about trading up to a much bigger yawl. He has years of sailing experience and can handle heavy weather along the northeast coast, but is still reluctant to fly a traditional spinnaker on his sloop. The reason - he really does not understand how to manage a big kite, and sticks with an asymmetrical instead. The size of the new boat will only increase the scale of spinnaker intimidation. Faced with this situation, we are sending him a copy of The Offshore Race Crew's Manual, and keeping another copy for ourselves, precisely because it offers detailed instructions which will enable him and his entire crew, already confident racing 30' one designs around the buoys, to master the additional skills and teamwork needed to make the move to bigger boats and blue water. While no one book details everything one needs to know for offshore sailing, having studied this book, everyone on the boat will understand where each person needs to be, what they need to do, how do get it done, when and why. We are confident the excellent guidance Stuart Quarrie offers here will enable our skipper to develop a first rate team and handle all his new boat's sails with confidence. If you are making a similar transition from little boats to big, I recommend you buy a copy for yourself, and another to lend out to your guests so they can join in the thrill of actively sailing on a bigger boat than they ever have before.
