Classic Album,

With all the changes happening in music in the late '60's this classic was a BIG hit in the U.K. but for a variety of reasons(they liked to be in the studio as opposed to touring, label on verge of bankruptcy) it got buried in the U.S. Great songs, Steve Marriott just before he left to help form Humble Pie with Peter Frampton as the next super group. This release was on the level of some of the great entries in the psychedelic period(Sgt. Pepper, Moby Grape, Cream, Jefferson Airplane, Jimi Hendrix,). The story line on side 2 is great, in conjunction with some really great songs. Side 1 is no slouch. You miss it, your loss. I re-bought it in every format it's ever been released in...............now they remix it.

Happiness Stan,
A Kid's Review

This is a prized LP from my comparitive youth, which I had not listened to in a many years. My loss. The "B Side" in particular - Happiness Stan - holds up incredibly well. And the narrative sounds as though it was written by Anthony Burgess himself. As fresh as the day it was recorded.

A Great Bargain,

I grew up loving my dad's cassette of this. The older I get the more brilliant it sounds.

Another one of my favourite albums, which to me is ageless. Ahead of their time! Loved it in the 60's, love it still. Love the story of Happiness Stan - very entertaining, and i'm sure written under the influence of some mind bending drugs - just not normal! Excellent! get it!

This album came out in the '60's when I was about 15 & in my rebellious stage. I listened to an FM "underground" station that played music not heard on the AM pop stations. The original album cover was round & had pages that opened up, finally revealing the vinyl album. My record collection was stolen & I despaired of ever finding another copy. I was delighted when I found a copy on Amazon, and listening to it brought back all the fun times I had as a teenager listening to "underground" music. This was before Rod Stewart joined & changed the band, so it's got a completely different sound. While there are a lot of drug references, the songs are fun, and the side with "Happiness Stan" brings back a lot of fond memories. Definitely a cd for anyone who was a child of the 60's!

Surprisingly Good,

Outside of Itchycoo Park, I never heard much Faces music until I got Long Player. It was horrible, so when I got hold of this CD, I wondered if it would stink just as bad. Turns out it was quite a surprise. This didn't sound anything like Long Player and impressed me right away.
This is not heavy rock, but almost psychedelic, almost folk, almost a lot of things. The songs are catchy and the vocals are not grating or annoying. The musicianship is outstanding and it doesn't sound sloppy or half-baked. It also tells a story, as with the Cockney narration throughout. I can actually remember melodies after the first listen. That is a very good sign in my book. It isn't my normal thing, but for not being a big fan of this type of music, they impressed me anyway. This album is a lost classic. Highly recommended. |
