Book Description

September 30, 1999 5 and up
Nicholas Heller and Jos. A. Smith invite you to the basement where twenty-six mischievous (and very hungry) ogres are eating their way through the alphabet. Expecting something formal? Be forewarned! Munching, nibbling, consuming, gobbling, imbibing, juicing, lapping, and wolfing were never so much fun. The offbeat, clever text simmers when read aloud, and the silly pictures--featuring gleeful ogres in all shapes and sizes--add more than a dash of flavor to an alphabet book that savors messy euphoria.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 1-Twenty-six hungry ogres (from Abednego to Zuleika) feast their way through the alphabet, munching on everything from anchovy butter to zucchini. As in Heller's Goblins in Green (Greenwillow, 1995), each letter entry is made up of a creature's name, a verb describing what it is doing, and an adjective, followed by a noun beginning with the next letter,. e.g., "Pernilla is peppering her parsnip quiche." The alliteration is sure to please children, even if they don't share the ogres' taste in snacks-"gobs of hummus," "ladles of molasses," "urns of vichyssoise." Smith's brightly colored gouache, watercolor, and pencil illustrations show the fun-loving ogres enjoying their food in many inventive ways. Youngsters may take added delight in searching for the many art masterpieces hidden throughout the pages. An entertaining concept book that's chock-full of clever wordplay.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good, solid ABC book, April 3, 2009
This book runs through 26 alliterative ogres, each eating an alphabetic food in a funny way. Interestingly, each ogre eats the food of the *next* ogre down the line - Abednego eats Anchovy Butter, Beulah Blows Bubbles in her Chocolate, all the way down to Zuleika, who Zips through her Asparagus. So maybe it's not the best for teaching letters directly. It's still a fun book, and it does mention many interesting foods, great for picky eaters and non-picky eaters alike :)

Love the artwork, btw - can't get enough of it!

I checked this out at the library, and we loved it so much I bought it. We read it often, and my kids have loved it at all ages going on 10! The names are fun, the ogres cute, the illustrations and hidden art wonderful... Good for learning letters, but an advanced reading level for older kids too. Also can help with trying new foods, that never-ending issue with little ones: we'll pretend we're ogres with silly alliterated names. Very imaginative.
