Editorial Reviews

Release information about the cassette album Release Date: 1987 Tracks in Oh Boy: Oh, Boy!, Heartbeat, You Are My One Desire, Listen To Me, Blue Days, Black Nights, I'm Gonna Love You Too, That's My Desire, It Doesn't Matter Anymore, Raining In My Heart, Early In The Morning amount of great music for somebody Buddy holly died tragically in a plane carash at te age of 22. When the album was compiled by the producers, they knew what they were doing. While several of the most famous Holly songs are missing in action here ("Peggy Sue," "That'll Be the Day"), the album is a fairly savvy snapshot of Holly's stylistic range. Here, you get everything from flat-out rockabilly (the under-familiar "Blue Days, Black Nights") and white boy R&B ("Early in the Morning"), to pure pop with guitars (the title song and "I'm Gonna Love You Too"), to the orchestral pop ("It Don't Matter Anymore") that he was experimenting with just before he died.

A fine collection from the master. Buddy Holly presents a number of the songs that have made him forever regarded as one of the founders of rock'n'roll as well as the basis of most modern music. A surprise inclusion in this collection is "That's My Desire", a fairly rare track much sought after by collectors over the years. The plane crash left this track as an unfinished performance as it stopped him from going back to finish it to his satisfaction. It is however a gem in its own right and indicates the high standards Buddy set for himself to know he was still not happy with it. If for no other reason, the collection is worth the price for this track alone, however "Early In The Morning" "Blue Days, Black Nights" and other tracks make this CD a positive steal at the price.

For the price this 1989 release isn't what you'd call a bad buy. OK, so it doesn't contain liner notes nor discography, and the sound, while adequate, could have been better.

But it does contain some hard-to-find Holly cuts like Rock Me My Baby, his version of the Little Richard 1956 and 1957 hits Ready Teddy and Send Me Some Lovin', as well as (You're So Square) Baby I Don't Care, and Love Me.

All in all, a nice inexpensive addition to any Buddy Holly collection.
