4.0 out of 5 stars Oh Boy pretty much says it, June 16, 2000
This review is from: Oh Boy Oh Boy (Audio CD)
Tim O'Brien, Scott Nygaard, and Mark Schatz put just enough polish on a bluegrass style to bring out the individual strengths of three very accomplished instrumentalists. Heartbreak Game and Few Are Chosen are fun to play along with as well as to listen to, When I Paint My Masterpiece is just plain fun. Scott and Mark helped out at Bluegrass Week of the Augusta Heritage Center a number of years ago, and were infectious in their enthusiasm. It shows throughout this cd. Tim O'Brien, while not as strong vocally on this collection as he has become by the time of The Crossing, still fronts the group with a consistent mandolin and lead voice. He Had A Long Chain On comes close to capturing the power they demonstrate in their live performances. This is a notable addition to basic Newgrass collections.

5.0 out of 5 stars O'Boy...O'Boy, April 28, 2006
This review is from: Oh Boy Oh Boy (Audio CD)
This is one of the best, by the most prolific singer, songwriter and musician in bluegrass and other gendres. Teamed with Tim is Mark, one of the most talented bass players(though not alone the best player), who plays banjo & cloggs...while playing his big ol' bass & Scott, who is just plain awesome when he flat picks! This recording is a treat...one of the best I've heard in a long time.Tim has written some of bluegrass (& countries) greatest songs, and no one plays a bouzouki quite as well. This of course, says his mandolin playing is less...but that would be wrong to assume. The licks this man performs are out of this world and deserving of a much larger audience.
If it is great down home picking and singing you like, this is one buy you won't regret. I would recommend this one to anyone who appreciates pure talent and listening to fun music, STRONGLY!
