Product Description

Oh Good Grief by Vince Guaraldi

This product is manufactured on demand using CD-R recordable media. Amazon.com's standard return policy will apply.

Amazon.com

Oh, Good Grief! isn't Vince Guaraldi's classic piano-trio recordings of his "Peanuts" favorites--for those, try the soundtrack to A Boy Named Charlie Brown. But it is a 1968 "re-imagining" of several of those favorites with Guaraldi on both piano and electric harpsichord, and Eddie Duran's electric guitar joining Carl Burnett's drums and Stanley Gilbert's bass. The sound is unfamiliar but the groove is unmistakably Guaraldi's, and it'll grow on you after your ear adjusts. For purists, the "Great Pumpkin Waltz" and "Rain, Rain Go Away" are a return to Guaraldi's trademark acoustic lyricism. It's only 28 minutes, unfortunately. --David Horiuchi

I've owned this CD since it first came out; and it's vinyl counterpart long before that. In fact, it was the first Vince Guaraldi recording I ever bought. At first, I was a bit disappointed because it didn't sound like the tracks from the CBS-TV specials; the infamous harpsicord being added to these tracks; but as you listen to it, you realize it didn't alter the feel of his music at all. If anything, it just added a bit more "zing." Let's face it, Vince's music is timeless; and what we have here is perhaps the best compilation of his Charlie Brown music. Slightly different? Yes. Enjoyable? Definately! Some of the best tracks on the disc are "You're in Love Charlie Brown," "Great Pumpkin Waltz," "It's Your Dog Charlie Brown," and "Rain, Rain Go Away." Fans of the Peanuts TV specials that go spastic at any deviation may want to stick to Vince's original soundtracks. Fans of Vince's music will definately want this compilation. And as of this writing, January 2000, the Weather Channel is using selections from this disc during the Local Forecast segments. I personally think that is a nice testament to this timeless music. But for those of you that don't like it, all I can say is, "Oh, Good Grief!"

If you are buying this CD expecting these tunes to sound like they do in the Peanuts specials, you're going to be disappointed; they have been altered quite a bit from their original versions. As one other reviewer stated, these recordings have a dated feel to them. I would give this album 5 stars if I was basing my rating just on the tunes themselves, but the re-arrangements of the songs knocks off a couple of stars. Do yourself a favor and get the original soundtrack albums instead. (A Charlie Brown Christmas, Charlie Brown's Holiday Hits, or A Boy Named Charlie Brown.) Timeless music, but this is not the one to buy.

Near the end of his career, Vince Guaraldi began experimenting with electric instrumentation. "Oh Good Grief" is one of the results of that experimentation. Clocking in under 30 minutes, the album provides new versions of "Linus & Lucy" and other "Peanuts" classics which feature electric harpsichord, guitar, and other non-traditional sounds.
If you want the classic "Peanuts" recordings, avoid this disc. But, if you are open to some fresh ideas from Vince Guaraldi, this is the place to look. It's not essential, but it is interesting.

Although the music contained on this CD gets a five star rating, the recording quality is pretty bad, especially when compared to the original vinyl lp. Hopefully WB records will release a remastered version sometime soon.

A painfully short CD with the Peanuts music from television. Synthesizer feels somewhat out of place here but there is much to savor here. This CD along with A Boy Named Charlie Brown and Charlie Brown Christmas are essential purchases. Linus & Lucy, He's Your Dog, and Peppermint Patty are highlights here. Had to dock this CD 1 star because of its brevity (much less than 30 minutes!).

I really loved these songs as they were in the original television programs in the late 1960s but unfortunately these are slightly different arrangements - different enough for me to be a bit disappointed in them. These tunes are the less prominent yet still instantly recognizable gems that can be heard sprinkled throughout shows like "You're in Love Charlie Brown" and "It's the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown", but Vince decided to remake these for this album prominently featuring either clavichord or harpsichord (I'm not sure which) which happens to be among my least favorite instruments. In any case they don't have the same sound as the originals. So throughout these wonderful songs is a sort of raspy plucked instrument sound which pretty nearly ruins them for me, as much as I enjoy the songs. If this doesn't sound like a problem for you, you will still find the same songs that we all know and love which are not available on most other compliations of Vince's work.

Please keep in mind that this music was written in 1968 and thus has a San Francisco-ish 60's vibe to it, particularly songs 2 & 3. The first track is a version of Linus & Lucy with synthesizer in it (which i am not too fond of), but listen to tracks 4-8 and you will hear some awesome Guaraldi tunes. My favorite is track 8 and this entire CD is always in my CD-changer.

As the last reviewer pointed out, these are different versions of Vince Guaraldi's selections for 5 different Charlie Brown specials (CB Christmas, CB's All Stars, Great Pumpkin, You're In Love CB and He's Your Dog CB). As for the harpsichord, I have mixed feelings about it (keeping in mind that as this album originally came out in 1968, that instrument was popularly used in the 1960's, like in the Yardbirds' "For Your Love" and the Doors' "Love Me 2 Times"). It sounds pretty on "You're In Love, Charlie Brown" (btw, there is a version in the actual special of the same name that does feature the harpsichord) and "Peppermint Patty," but sounds annoying on this version of "Linus and Lucy" and "Red Baron." It sounds cool, though, on "Oh Good Grief" and sounds ok on It's Your Dog, CB." 2 of the songs (my personal favorites in this CD) "Rain Rain Go Away" and "The Great Pumpkin Waltz" don't feature it at all. "GP Watlz" and "Red Baron" 1st appeared in It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown (another rendition of GP Waltz can be heard in You're a Good Sport, Charlie Brown). The guitarist Eddie Duran proves to be a talented guitarist here, adding more of a bluesy feel to some of the songs. "Rain Rain Go Away" was featured in CB's All Stars (later featured in It's Arbor Day, Charlie Brown). "In Love..." and "Peppermint Patty" were introduced in You're In Love, Charlie Brown. "It's Your Dog" was featured in He's Your Dog, CB (and sounds like a Linus and Lucy rewrite). Of course, "Linus and Lucy" is featued in most of the early specials (if you don't recognize the title, you'll recognize the music). "Oh Good Grief" was originally written for a documentary entitled A Boy Named CB (no relation to the movie of the same name). My main complaint is that the album clocks in at less than 30 minutes.Read more ›
