5.0 out of 5 stars "Oh Happy Day" is a joy
I could do without the Jon Bon Jovi track, but this whole album is a delight. It finds a good balance between diversity of style and arrangements, without splintering into a million pieces. And the material deserves it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Make a Joyful Noise, for I Can't Set Down!!, June 14, 2009

This CD is simply a heck of a lot of fun. I remember when "Oh Happy Day" first hit the charts in the late 60s, and recall that Edwin Hawkins and crew caught a lot of flack from area church officials for performing in secular venues, not to mention that there were petitions to rock stations not to play the song, since, evidently, sacred songs should not be contaminated by association with such devil's music.

But my, how the times have changed!! God is not dead (as was touted back then in that famous slogan ripped off from Nietzsche), the devil does not have a monoploy on good tunes (he never did--read the psalms) nor rhythms (not to mention the rich, moving, even sensuous voices), and genre-melding is no longer the no-no it once was. Even if you're not a gospel fan, this compilation will have you tapping your feet at the very least, especially if you enjoy classic soul and R&B. Smart, sassy arrangements, songs of verve and hope, and a well-paced sequence makes this CD a winner. I want MORE!!

I'm not sure what I was expecting, but this album was wonderful. The diversity of groups and sounds in incredible. I loved every single cut and recommended it hightly. Think Michael McDonald or Aaron Neville or even Jon Bon Jovi singing with a gospel choir. My new favorite cd.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Collection, May 30, 2009

Patty Griffin and Mavis Staples absolutely NAIL it! The Al Green and Heather Headley is a winner too, and Queen Latifah's Oh Happy Day is worth its while. The album is worth it just for the Patty/Mavis track, for sure.

This is just plain terrific for those who like the blues combined with inspiration. Almost every track is a wow. Great for driving, dancing, or even housework. I'd like to play this for all the politicians in this country. Seriously.

"Oh Happy Day"is a decidedly AWE-spiring collaboration of the greatest music-masters from both the secular and spiritual arenas'...Admitedly,what"sealed the deal"as far as my decision to purchase this album was the appearance of the BEST thing to happen to Gospel since the Winans first entered a sound booth!! I'm talking about Heather Headley!! See,after playing"Audience of One"over and over again virtually NONSTOP,since I bought it over a year ago,I was just DYING to hear some"fresh",new material by her!! I recieved my Heather"fix"in SPADES,as she and Al Green virtually"TORE IT OUT OF THE FRAME"on"People Get Ready"!! Mrs.Headley just"KILLED it"with the ultra-emphatic:"But you GOTTTTAAA have pity on those, whose chances grow"thinner!!!" Jon Bon Jovi gained a new fan in me with the emotion wracked:"Keep the Faith"which chronicles the plight of one in an anguished state of mind!! A laudible juncture on this great song goes:"I'm walking in the"footsteps"of societys'LIES,and I don't LIKE what I see no more, sometimes I WISH these eyes were BLIND,sometimes I wait"forever"when I stand out IN the rain,so NO one SEES me CRYIN',tryin' to"wash away"this PAIN!!" My longtime favorite Michael Mcdonald does a LAUDIBLE job with a song that puts a(PROFOUND)new twist on an age-old phrase..His(scriptually)accurate song"Storm Before The Calm"essentially summarizes the believers"walk"with King Jesus!! Starting so eloquently with:"As the days grows"darker"we lose"sight"of the dawn,we PRAY for better days, hoping peace will carry on...We cry:"Lord show us"compassion"and He forgives us EVERY time,as He takes us through the"storm"before the calm!!" More profound lyrics say:"Sometimes men of DESPERATION,will NOT believe the Devil LIES,until what we're LEFT with in the end,is a world of "SHATTERED"lives!!" More cautions on deception go:"We gotta LEARN to find the difference, between the"surface"where it shows, between what LIARS wanna TELL us,and what they'd rather we DON'T know!!" "We gotta FIND out WHERE we're going,BEFORE we go TOO far,if we gonna make it through the storm before the "CALM"!! Get this album QUICK,and make YOUR day a HAPPY one!!
