Excellent country version of classic hymn,
By Shadomega (Oregon) - See all my reviews

I do want to mention that I despise when people give 5 stars to a song when it really doesn't warrant it, and if I had the option I probably would have been more inclined to give it 4 1/2 stars, but there really isn't anything wrong with this song to make me round down. I also feel that this song is likely to get a lower rating simply because it is country and not pop, so yes I'm granting a half star upgrade to offset the genre deraters (so sue me).
Former Lonestar frontman, Richie McDonald recorded this version of Oh Holy Night in 2007 when he first went solo. As the first two reviews have commented, he does sing with some twang, but I hardly consider this to be a problem. It's more a product of his accent than anything outlandish or exaggerated, and people who enjoy any country music probably won't even notice it. This song does showcase one aspect of country music that I really enjoy and that is the close harmony on the choruses. McDonald and his backups are really tight and fit perfectly together. This song moves along at a good pace, neither too slow nor too fast. It is beautifully sung, and props to Mr. McDonald, when it calls for stretching out on the vocals, he stretches out! I can't find anything wrong with this song, it really is a well produced track. Even though country is not my first choice for listening preference, I can't fault it for reflecting the musician's background either. This would be a perfect addition to any family-friendly Christmas playlist.

It seems that every year record labels push their artists to pop out a quick Christmas album with a bunch of the same songs with a "new" take on them that really isn't new at all. This is one of those songs. If you haven't ever heard a slightly country version of this song then prepare yourself: there are tons of them and this will be only one of many. But like most of you I've heard this song and this sound by dozens of faceless artists and I'm not impressed.

Good rendition,

This song is recorded by a country artist so of course it is going to have a country sound to it. I like it, but it is no where near the best rendition. By far the very best Christmas album is by Jewel. Before you dismiss this just listen to her sing Ave Maria. On O Holy Night her voice is both soft and powerful at the same time.
