Christina Aguilera has been through alot and spoken about it with no hesitation. The haunting I'm Ok from the Stripped album addressed the painful childhood memories of the constant physical and emotional abuse her mother suffered from her father.
On the flipside, the heartfelt ballad Oh Mother praises her mom's strength and courage for getting herself and her two daughters out of that traumatic environment. "It was the day that he turned on his kids/That she knew she just had to leave him/So many voices inside of her head/Saying over and over and over, 'You deserve much more than this'/She was so sick of believing the lies and trying to hide/Covering the cuts and bruises/So tired of defending her life, she could have died/Fighting for the lives of her children!"
By the song's middle, Christina's voice rises as she assures her mother that "for everytime he tried to break you down/Just remember who's still around/It's over, and we're stronger/And we'll never have to go back again!" The sample of Bruno Coulais' orchestral Vois Sur Ton Chemin adds a beautiful touch with it's elegant strings and melodic piano. It sounds just as amazing as an instrumental too. "I love you, Mom."
