Book Description

May 4, 2010
Calling the toughest canine questions!

Owning a dog is one of life’s great joys, but sometimes the challenges it brings can make even the most devoted dog lovers panic, throw up their hands, or feel completely overwhelmed. Before you get to the end of your leash, turn to this friendly and relatable reference that’s the next best thing to talking to a dog-owning friend who's seen it all.

In Oh My Dog, animal rights activist Beth Ostrosky Stern has compiled tips and invaluable advice from experts—and from her own experience as dogowner—to sooth concerns, answer questions big and small, and help you and your dog get the most out of your relationship. From the moment you even consider getting a dog, to caring for your old friend when his puppy years are far behind him, Oh My Dog covers every angle of dog ownership, including:

- Which breeds would be good match for me?

- What do I look for in a vet?

- How do I make sure our first night together is as stress-free as possible?

- What activities will help me bond with my dog?

- Is my dog showing sign of illness?

- What should I know before I head to a doggie day care or park?

- How do I read pet food labels?

- What should I do in an emergency?

Choc full of informative side bars, questionnaires, to-do lists, and much, much more, Oh My Dog is the answer-filled field guide for anybody who owns a dog or is considering getting one.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Beth Ostrosky Stern (aka Mrs. Howard Stern) presents a compendium of excellent advice for those new to the art of dog ownership with help from coauthor Grish. Stern, a longtime animal-rights activist and spokesperson for the North Shore Animal League, provides a lot of sensible advice as well as tips from veterinary experts for those entertaining the idea of dog ownership. In addition to determining whether your lifestyle will permit successful dog ownership, other topics include the true financial cost of dog ownership, picking a breed, adopting versus purchasing, and raising a puppy. While the book is written in an easygoing, conversational way, even longtime dog owners will find helpful information here. Designed for quick and easy reference, each chapter is packed with information, sidebars, and Ask Dr. Z! segments, a collection of questions about quirky dog behaviors and what they mean. A great resource for potential and current dog owners, this provides calm, rational, and, in some cases, step-by-step tips for navigating the world of dog ownership. --Kathleen Hughes

Review

"Whether you're an experienced pet parent, trying to decide on the type of dog you want, or you simply love animals, this book is a must-have. It is packed with practical information and a wonderful resource."

1.0 out of 5 stars Really a pretty good book August 13, 2011
Format:Paperback
My favorite part was chapter three where Ms. Stern teaches us the difference between a European bent-knee pose and the less formal Pittsburgh bent-knee pose. I also love how the publisher was able to put all her teeth on the cover.

1.0 out of 5 stars Can't teach an old dog new tricks December 14, 2011
By Tay42
Format:Paperback
Same old story told by a pretty face. Tried to find something positive about the book, but quite frankly, I have learned more from the yearly visit to the vet than I did trying to wade through glamour shots. There are far better informational books out there for serious pet owners. Talk to your vet. Even free pamphlets are better and you will have money left in your pocket for a new calendar.

1.0 out of 5 stars Seriously September 23, 2010
By Chus
Format:Paperback
In which chapter does she talk about her own dog being trained by a professional? Or getting her dog from a breeder, despite telling others to adopt from shelters?

1.0 out of 5 stars What credentials does the author have? April 23, 2012
Format:Paperback
Other than being the wife of a millionaire radio sell out? None. There are plenty of great dog books by authors with actual credentials, why would anyone buy this silly one?

1.0 out of 5 stars My Dog is only working three days a week.... June 12, 2011
By Booey
Format:Paperback
Harrible book. Harrible author. This no talent, plastic surgery enhanced Hamptonite can't figure out how to work a pooper scooper and she is writing books. I rather watch Idol and eat NATCHOS than keep reading this book. I bought the book while I was on one of my 23 weeks vacation and it was soo bad I went back to work. Embarrasing !

1.0 out of 5 stars No zero star rating? Really? November 27, 2011
Format:Paperback
Horrible excuse for a book. Obviously written by a ghost writer. I really can't recommend this for anyone looking to train their pet as the "author" got a pet or two from a breeder.

After having read the book, I have to say a few things. First off, the supposed author (Beth Ostrosky) did not write this material. This book was clearly ghost written. Read more

I could probably find all of this for free via a google search, and even then I can guarantee I'd find some contradictory advice as well. Not as useful as I had hoped.

Thinking Of Buying This Book: Read This First
I have to agree with the first sentence with the following:

"The author has no training or expertise in the field of animal care.

She advocates getting shelter pets but owns a purebred bulldog that she had professionally TRAINED. The "expert" couldn't even train her own... Read more

Please people dont support this book.
Beth has never trained a dog and when people ask her questions her answer is always to simply throw money at the situation and hire a real professional. When Scott DePace asked how to keep his dog from jumping up and chewing things Beth's answer was "you need to get a professional trainer to... Read more
