This review is from: Oh Shit ! It's Jesus (Paperback)
Steve Hughes appears to be involved in what we would call "the emergent church." The intent of this book is: it is all about Jesus. That is a good intent. It seems that periodically religious people put layers of stuff inbetween God and us, and Steve Hughes is trying to help people break through all that stuff, and have a direct relationship with the one living and true God. Unfortunatly, it seems like he thinks he is the first person to ever do this. The Reformation of the Church was all about this, as were the various pietistic renewal movements through the centuries.
I would review this higher, except there are a couple of faults with this book. One is that Mr. Hughes is guilty of what he accuses others of: He is judgmental in a negative way against some other Christians, such as "street preachers", some of whom I have met and know for a fact are not the way he describes them. Also, Mr. Hughes says that Jesus was uneducated. Actually, Jesus was highly educated. He could read and write. He was trained as a Rabbi. It is all there in the gospels. I would recommend that Mr. Hughes and others read "Velvet Elvis" by Rob Bell. Blessings to your days and your deeds, Mr. Hughes.

The subtitle says it perfectly - "the relevance of Jesus without all the religious crap."
This is a fascinating book, very easy and quick to read, and hard to put down. It feels like you're having a friendly conversation in a coffee shop... or maybe hiking with a friend on a trail... talking about THE most important topic there is. It's approachable and concise, with plenty of humor and refreshing honesty. If you've ever wondered whether Jesus is really relevant for your life - if you want to investigate Christianity with an open mind - I encourage you to give this book a try. Also recommended - "The Case for Faith," by Lee Strobel.
