4.0 out of 5 stars we all want to run away from home sometimes, July 19, 2006

This review is from: Oh, Simple (Hardcover)
My 7 yr old daughter going into 2nd grade enjoyed reading this easily & quickly to herself. Chipmunk children clearly have some of the same experiences as human children! When young male chipmunk Beasely wasn't happy w/the situation @ home, he "ran away" next door. He & young female chipmunk Winnifred passed the time OK for a while, but Beasely soon learned the timeless lesson about the grass not always being greener on the other side of the fence. The reader's heart goes out to Beasely, already downtrodden after not getting his way & leaving home, when Winnifred makes fun of all the special & favorite items he packed. Certain themes are universal & well portrayed in this short tale - desire to escape when things don't go one's way, children taunting each other & jockeying for supremacy, spat between friends, & home court advantage. The book's tiny size & darling detailed illustrations are very appealing to children.
