Great Chicago Doo Wop,
By
This review is from: Oh What a Night: Very Best Of The Dells (Audio CD)
If you love the 50's street corner sound this is the one for you. This cd features the classic doo wop ballad "Now I Pray" as well as one of the all time doo wop classics "Oh What A Night" and "Dry Your Eyes' and plenty more. Most didn't make the national charts but who cares-that was all under the table politics plus there was just so much great stuff coming out during this period by so many great groups that it was totally impossible to fit them all in on the national listings- there just simply wasn't enough room.If you love great doo wop like I do it's the great harmonies and romantic lyrics that matter not the chart positions the song attained. These guys from Harvey,Illinois were one of the masters of a great sound that The Moonglows,The ElDorados,The Spaniels, and The Flamingos acheived. You can hear Marvin Juniors soulful vocals coming through early on. Marvin should also get credit as a soul inventor along with the likes of James Brown,Ray Charles, and Sam Cooke. Marvin who sang lead on the majority of their late 60's early 70's tracks was idolized by Teddy Pendergrass who was Harold Melvin and The BlueNotes lead singer at that time. When you listen to Marvin Jr. sing and then Teddy you'll hear the influence. A great cd worthy of any doo wop or vocal group harmony fan-enjoy !

I love this CD. I have the original "Oh What A Nite" on the Vee-Jay label. I still play this album alot. My favorite song is "Why Do You Have To Go". The Dells back then showed the world how talented they were back then THey wrote mostly all of the songs on thier debut album. Of course the classic "Oh What A Night" stand on its own. This is for doo-wop lovers only. Vee-Jay records had the best in thier fold.
