1.0 out of 5 stars Ohana
All the reviewers so far must have been relatives of Ohana,
George Winston piano version of "Ike ai Ladana" was outstanding.
I was disappointed in Ohana's for I know a guitar would have
sounded great for this song, but Ohana was a 0 star.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice CD!, June 27, 2000

I enjoy this CD a lot. I found some of the cuts a bit long, and I wish the father/son combo had appeared on more of the songs, because they sound great together. As it is, Dennis gets away from what he does best: simple but beautiful traditional melodies and his own songs. I didn't care much for the "Around the World in 80 Days" cut.. just doesn't fit somehow. All in all, an enjoyable CD though... well worth owning.

5.0 out of 5 stars My favorite CD, September 27, 2001

I received this CD as a present from my daughter two months ago, fell in love with it, and have listened to it daily since. The wonderfully mellow voices of both Dennis and David and superb slack key guitar and ukele playing just make all daily task so pleasant. I have since listened to several other Hawaiin slack key guitarists, but this remains my favorite. I eagerly await more CD's with this father/son duo.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dennis is a superb guitar player and has a wonderful voice., September 12, 1999

Dennis Kamakahi has masterful control over both his slack-key guitar and his voice. Even though I don't understand the Hawaiian language, I totally love this CD. You don't need to know the language to get the feeling and Dennis is a very good communicator.

How exciting to be able to pass the love for the old kine music down to your son! Dennis and David both show their musical artistry on this album. There is probably no greater living Hawaiian songwriter than Dennis Kamakahi. His mastery of the poetry is unrivaled. The legacy continues with David, who is able to showcase his ukulele virtuosity on this CD. Their rendition of Ulili E is the best I have ever heard. Too bad, though, that they do not record the stories behind the songs, as well. But make sure you read the liner notes. The "talk story" makes these songs even more exciting. A must have for any lover of ki ho`alu and any Hawaiian music.

I own many slack key recordings and this may be my favorite, it has it all. His recording of 'Ulili E is my favorite slack key song and definately the best version of this traditional song ever recorded.

5.0 out of 5 stars More Kamakahi excellence!, January 12, 1999
This review is from: Ohana (Audio CD)
Dennis Kamakahi is both a talented Hawaiian slack key guitarist and a prolific songwriter, joined here by his son, David (Kawika), displaying his own talents on the `ukulele. This recording gives the listener tracks of solo guitar, solo `ukulele (some instrumental-only; some with vocals), as well as `ukulele/guitar duets. A definite "must have" for fans of traditional Hawaiian music.

the rev. kamakahi has a sweet tenor voice that complements his slack key playing. this album is a nice introduction for new listeners, as it includes many easy to appreciate melodies. it is also a good album for fans, as kamakahi's interpretations of some old classics are quite beautiful and moving.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Whole 'OHANA loves it!, January 2, 2000
By A Customer

We have diverse ages in this family, from 2 to 41 years of age. But we all agree, this is now the family favorite. The 2 year old runs around the house saying "Hawaii Hawaii" whenever she hears it and the 9 year old enjoys Track 6 so much that she always presses the REPEAT button when it begins to play. The music is peaceful and the voices are gentle. It is a strong reminder of trips to Hawaii. (Frankly, it's so effective, we're leaving for a Big Island visit within the month!) If you're looking for some Hawaiian music and "Tiny Bubbles" isn't what you're thinking of, buy this album. Heck, buy 2. For the play value, it's a bargain!

5.0 out of 5 stars One of my top 10 favorite CDs of all time!, May 26, 2009
This review is from: Ohana (Audio CD)
I'm a huge Hawaiian Music Fan, just ask my husband! This is one of my top 10 favorite CD's of all time. I will listen to this CD until the end of my days!
Dennis Kamakahi has a way of writing music that delves deep into the hearts of his listeners and stays there. The rhythms of his songs haunt you long after the songs are over and leave you wanting more. I just can't get enough of his music!!!!!! He is my favorite songwriter and his voice has a sweet comforting sound. He is tops when it comes to Slack Key guitar and if you've never heard Slack, my friend, you're in for a treat! With this being said, Dennis Kamakahi's son David joins him on this CD. David is a chip off the old block and adds even a deeper dimension to the sound. Harmony between Father and Son are absolutely beautiful! I know you will treasure this CD as much as I do. Torie Brown
