Product Description

The Ohaus Compact Scale offers precision weighing results, and has a stainless steel weighing platform that can handle bulky samples in a variety of applications, including weighing soil samples, postal weighing, and food weighing for home-use dietary needs. The weighing platform is corrosion-resistant, and measures 13.3 x 14.4cm (W x D), and can easily be removed for cleaning (W is width, the horizontal distance from left to right; D is depth, the horizontal distance from front to back). The scale can be operated using AC power or three standard AA batteries, offering full mobility in the field and when a power supply is hard to find, for up to 300 hours. When running on batteries, the scale turns off automatically after approximately four minutes if no weighing activity is occurring. The scale has an external calibration system, operated from the front-facing keypad (calibration masses not included), to ensure accurate measurements. Protection from radio frequency means that this scale delivers accurate results when used in production areas or near cellular phones.

The scale measures in grams, ounces, pounds-and-ounces, and Newtons, and tares over the entire weighing range. Overload protection prevents damage to the weighing cell and scale if too-heavy samples are mistakenly used. This scale is approved for use in compliance with CE-listed and FCC Class B Part 15 operation guidelines, and manufactured to ISO 9001:2008 standards.

Scales and balances are measuring instruments used to determine the mass of an object. Mechanical balances are the simplest type of balance, and use a lever and slide to indicate the measurement. Conventional balances are commonly used in offices, the jewelry industry, and in kitchens, and display results digitally, but are less precise than analytical balances. Analytical balances measure to a high degree of precision and accuracy (0.0001g or better), and display results digitally. These balances have a cover with doors to prevent dust and airflow from affecting the measurement. Moisture balances analyze moisture content in a material sample, using infrared or halogen heat sources to dry the sample and then calculate the moisture content from the before- and after-drying weight, and display results digitally, on the balance, or transfer the information for display on a computer.

Ohaus manufactures scales and balances for laboratory, educational, retail, food, and jewelry applications. The company, which was founded in 1914, is headquartered in Parsippany, NJ.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best bang for the buck in a household digital scale February 20, 2005
Color Name:Without Postal Chart|Size Name:2000 g
I've owned this scale for about 4 years and use it mostly in the kitchen to weigh ingredients.

The Zero function is indespensible. You can place a bowl or other container on the scale and zero the scale then weigh each ingredient as you add it to the bowl, zeroing between ingredients.

The scale even remembers to subtract the weight of the bowl and any contents added before the last time you zeroed it. You can remove the bowl to add ingredients and place the bowl back on the scale and the scale will only show the weight of the new ingredient.

I have a digital scale from another manufacturer, which has a zero function but does not remember the zero value if you remove the container and place it back on the scale. It's a pain.

Ohaus has a long tradition of accuracy. Their triple beam analog scales have been used in scientific laboratories for years. This scale is very accurate and repeatable and stays accurate over time. In the 4 or so years I've owned it I have only had to replace the batteries 2 or 3 times, and I use it every day.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not a kitchen scale? January 3, 2007
Color Name:Without Postal Chart|Size Name:2000 g
I use this scale exclusively in the kitchen. It is not intended for kitchen use. One has to be very careful not to spill ingredients on it - the area under the weighing platform is accessible only with a toothpick. Lack of care will result in a short life - the works will begin to stick, signalling the end. Also it must be gently handled. I manage to get about 5 years out of mine - am on my third one as I write. The accuracy and repeatability are superb, unsurpassed in this price range. Using this scale to measure ingredients for baking result in absolutely the same quality product every time! No variation. I recommend it, but Be Careful!

1.0 out of 5 stars Bad product, terrible customer support December 27, 2008
Color Name:Without Postal Chart|Size Name:5000 g
Complete garbage! I purchased this scale to weigh small foam radio control aircraft that weigh around 8 ounces. I only use it when I build a new aircraft so it gets very little use. I used it approximately 5 times over about 18 months now the LCD only partially works with random lines rendering the scale completely useless. Calling Ohaus for repair they stated it would cost $89.60/hour plus shipping! I laughed and said I would never buy their products again, I recommend you stay far away from Ohaus and the garbage they sell!

5.0 out of 5 stars Solid August 12, 2010

This is a solid little scale. Easy to use, light weight but well constructed. I love the zero function, also great that I can use either a power supply or batteries. Great deal!

1.0 out of 5 stars Not worth the money! July 16, 2011
Color Name:Without Postal Chart|Size Name:5000 g
I agree totally with the first reviewer who gave this scale a poor review. I've had mine for 5 or six years now so mine has outlived the first reviewer's scale, but now the screen has started to crap out. The digital LCD display has lost some of the lines and has made the scale useless. For the money I paid, I would expect a scale to last longer than 5 years. Do yourself a favor and look at a different kitchn digital scale.
