Pictorial Guide to America's Ballistic Missile Subs!, October 15, 2011
This review is from: Ohio-Class Submarine - On Deck No. 3 (Paperback)
The 18 nuclear-powered Ohio-Class submarines originally built were fearsome weapons of war or vital instruments of strategic deterrence, depending on your viewpoint. At present, the 14 Ohio-class SSBNS carry about 50% of the total U.S. strategic warhead inventory. Four other Ohio-class subs, now-redesignated SSGNs, have been converted to carry cruise missiles with conventional warheads. Jim Goodall examines those 18 craft in OHIO-CLASS SUBMARINES ON DECK, a 2007 Squadron/Signal release.
Most of the Ohio-class boats - USS Nevada, Alabama, Maryland, Rhode Island, etc. exist to deliver Trident ballistic missiles armed with thermonuclear warheads on to enemy targets. USS Ohio, Michigan, Georgia and Florida destroy their targets using Tomahawk cruise missiles, Additionally they can carry 60+ USN special ops personnel and SEAL delivery equipment.
After a very short overview of the Navy's ballistic submarines, Goodall offers up 80 pages of alternating b&w and color pages depicting the various Ohio-class boats. There seems to be a rough organization to the photos, the first section being construction/launching pix followed by general deck views, several pages on Trident missiles, 20 pages of 'inside-the-boat' shots, etc. As with other 'On Deck' volumes, the photographs are well captioned. Aside from shots of USS Henry M. Jackson taken by the author, most of the pix seem to be official USN. Paging through the book, one is struck by how immense those subs really are.
If you're a 'Silent Service' buff, OHIO-CLASS SUBMARINES ON DECK should be on interest. It provides a comprehensive photo-guide to the Navy's latest and greatest underwater warships. Recommended.

Amazing Little Book, January 11, 2011
This review is from: Ohio-Class Submarine - On Deck No. 3 (Paperback)
Don't let the 80 pages or seemingly cartoonish cover page fool you. It's not a kids book. This book is packed with pictures that you can't find anywhere on the web. Informative and interesting. Bought it as a coffee-table reader and it suits that role perfectly.
