This review is from: Ohio Express/Chewy Chewy (Audio CD)
This is an OFFICIAL CD release of the Ohio Express 2nd LP 'Ohio Express' and 3rd LP 'Chewy Chewy' released July 1968 and February 1969 respectively. The first LP presented here is an unusual mix of pure bubblegum and experimental psych-pop. Despite being released less than a year apart, the albums display very different musical styles. It's good to have these classics in the digital realm in full stereo. I'm subtracting 2 stars for the following reasons. The packaging leaves a lot to be desired. There are few liner notes and the pictures of the original LP covers are 3" x 3". Therefore I give the packaging a grade of D. In addition, though the sound is quite good, and at times excellent, two songs on 'Chewy Chewy' titled 'Nothing Sweeter Than My Baby' and 'Chewy Chewy' have issues. The first has sporadic high-end drop-out in the left channel. It sounds like the master was possibly damaged or not tracking properly. Interestingly, this song appears on the CD 'The Best Of The Ohio Express' with the same drop-out, but not to such the extent as on this CD. The 2nd mentioned song has an odd bleedover problem so that during a quiet passage, one can hear another part of the song bleeding in. Again, sounds like a problem with the master tape. The version of `Chewy Chewy' on the Best Of CD does not exhibit this distortion. So, I give the audio quality a solid B grade. I recommend this CD!
