About what you'd expect from an elementary school book on the topic,
By Lawrence M. Sanger (Ohio) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Ohio (Hello U.S.A.) (Paperback)
My little boy and I live in Ohio and I read it to him cover-to-cover due to an interest in geography. This is a pretty well-written introduction to the state pitched to the mid- to upper-elementary level. The approach taken is, like many elementary school-level "library" books, rather pedestrian. There is no attempt to make history, for example, especially fascinating. But the writing is clear and overall the production does give one a pretty good intro to Ohio. While this is not unimportant, in an introductory book about a state, the editor could have asked for more information about state government (very scant treatment here), the big cities, sports teams, the distinctive features and attractions of the state, the day in a life of a farm or an auto or tire maker, etc. But one topic pulled out for special development is the environment. It's also weird that there wasn't a good-quality map in the book. The pictures are very nice, and the chapter on history was pretty good. So overall we learned a lot from it.
