Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

A major, full-length, one-volume history of the Buckeye State. Knepper shows that Ohio has not been dominated by one set of factors over others. Rather its history is that of the most "middle" of the midwestern states. Knepper provides admirable balance in this model state history, beginning with prehistory and ending in the late 1980s. There is sufficient anecdote to make it interesting popular reading and enough detail and interpretation to satisfy a scholar's need for a historical synthesis. With no footnotes, few illustrations, and a ten-page book-only bibliography, it is suitable for high schools and above. Walter Havighurst's Ohio: A Bicentennial History (LJ 5/15/77), a more superficial work, and E.H. Roseboom and F.P. Weisenberger's History of Ohio (1953; Ohio Historical Soc., 1969. rev. ed.), are the only comparable works. Essential for Ohio libraries, and highly recommended for libraries in neighboring states and large public and academic libraries.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lincoln Was Right, Without Ohio America Would Be Different, May 6, 2010

This review is from: Ohio and Its People (Paperback)
Knepper offers a history of the Buckeye State, and in the process a history of its impact the US. Many people have noted this legacy, but Knepper illustrates how it did occur. In this book you will also be given a look at the people who helped settle and maintain the great state of Ohio. You will not get a lot about the cultural impact of Ohio, but then what can canned pumpkin and a soapbox derby do? The book is very readable, but is a textbook, so be forewarned that it might drag at sports. However, if you love Ohio it is worth the price on the cover.
