First, as a disclaimer, I live in Ohio and I have a lot of pride in my state. I purchased this book to borrow ideas for Ohio day trips and activities. 2.0 out of 5 stars Wish There Was An Alternate Tour Book, December 27, 2011
This review is from: Ohio Road Trips: 52 Trips- Hundreds of Fun and Unusual Getaway Ideas in Ohio! (Paperback)
First, as a disclaimer, I live in Ohio and I have a lot of pride in my state. I purchased this book to borrow ideas for Ohio day trips and activities. As an earlier reviewer stated, a lot of the activities are more attractive on the page than in person. While I find the book useful for providing an 'initial' spark, I have to rely mostly on independent research to build on the trips to make them more enticing and worthwhile. Many facts are wrong in the book. There are listed several destinations that have been long-time closed. The book is filled with many unique, undesirable destinations and activities, and it isn't balanced with an equal number of very unique, yet enjoyable activities. For example, nobody in Ohio really visits the Football Hall of Fame. We're rather embarrassed by it. Items such as these should have been stricken out of the recent edition. There is also little discussion about a number of wonderful destinations that are hidden gems. I would expect destinations, like the beautiful Allen Memorial Art Museum at Oberlin College, to be listed. I would expect some of the more historic cathedrals, like St. Stanislaus in historic Warszawa (Slavic Village in Cleveland) to be listed because their beauty rivals European cathedrals. Basically, there is a lot of content that should be omitted and a lot of content that is missing. My review of this book is best summarized with the following statement: Every Time I Rely On This Book, I Have An Urge To Contact The Publisher and Propose That I Rewrite It. As somebody who loves to explore my state, I know that any Ohioan can publish a better guide. On a positive note, however, I think that the author is the only one who has compiled a list of multiple ideas, and I really appreciate that.
