4.0 out of 5 stars Well, It's Good For A Maxi-Single, But..., November 22, 1999
This review is from: Oiche Chiun (Silent Night) [Maxi Single] (Audio CD)
"Silent Night" has always been a celebrated Christmas track, and over the years it would be innovative to search for new yet traditionally merit arrangements of this Christmas carol. For Enya's version, it's simply good - short, simple, sweet, but rather boring after some time. After all, you've heard the song so many times, and sadly her new arrangement just isn't captivating enough. Of course, it's worth listening to, but to rearrange a song in her own unique style, nah...I think she could do better!

Still, I especially enjoyed "Oriel Window" - it's a piano recital on par or maybe even better than all her wonderful piano pieces released in her previous albums, such as "Watermark" and "From Where I Am". The last track doesn't meet up to the former's standard, nonetheless it has the haunting magic that made Enya a success from producing "Watermark".

If you're an avid Enya fan (like me), I don't think you should miss this out from your collection of records. However, if you've never heard her music, I advise you not to purchase this yet as it would give you a "gimmicky" impression of this new-age diva. Get her other CDs and get in the swing of her music first, then see how you'd react to her own style of musical composition in a classic Christmas carol.

5.0 out of 5 stars Atmospheric, October 4, 2000
This review is from: Oiche Chiun (Silent Night) [Maxi Single] (Audio CD)
You cannot beat having Silent Night in another language.I love hearing different language interpretations of holiday favourites. Makes things more... multicultural and festive. No one better to bring us Silent Night in Irish than the incomparable Enya who delivers a otherworldly, if not heavenly, version of Silent Night. Something you must have for your Christmas music collections!

5.0 out of 5 stars Brought tears to my eyes........, December 24, 2000
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Oiche Chiun (Silent Night) [Maxi Single] (Audio CD)
This is one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard...brought tears to my eyes when I heard it. Christmas is not compete without it. Don't listen to those who say it is dull listening to 'Silent Night' in another langauge! Listening to Enya singing it is like listening to the angels themselves...Need I say more?

5.0 out of 5 stars Words fail me, June 21, 2000
This review is from: Oiche Chiun (Silent Night) [Maxi Single] (Audio CD)
Silent Night is indescribably beautiful. It brings tears to my eyes every time I play it. Vintage Enya chord progressions and key changes. Fluid, romantic, sensual, contlemplative . . . .Heaven for your head.

Oh, how I long for an entire Christmas Holiday CD from this artist!

5.0 out of 5 stars A breathtaking recording!, January 30, 2000

This review is from: Oiche Chiun (Silent Night) [Maxi Single] (Audio CD)
This is the most beautiful Christmas song ever recorded--don't listen to those who say it's dull! It transports you to the atmosphere of an ancient, silent, holy place, and the vocals are stunning--breathy and full. It either gives me goose bumps, takes my breath away, or makes me cry, depending on my mood. Don't miss it!

Heard this on a restaurant tape at dinner the other night, and it sent shivers up and down my spine. It's the most beautiful version of "Silent Night" I've ever heard, and I'm buying the CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Christmas music!, December 28, 1999

This is very wonderful music for Christmas. It is very soothing, enchanting and touching music, which is perfect for Christmas. I wish it had a few more songs, but these songs alone were wonderful gifts for Christmas.

I'm not one for Christmas music, I admit..but Enya does great with this. I would say the track that really does it for me on here is 'Oriel Window'. I took a liking to that track immediately. Yet another must own product from Enya.

4.0 out of 5 stars You probably can already imagine how this will sound..., October 13, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Oiche Chiun (Silent Night) [Maxi Single] (Audio CD)
Enya does "Silent Night" in her trademark way: Very slowly, with vocal layering and extremely simple accompaniment in which a single chord is sustained until the next chord change, then that next chord is sustained, and so on.

It's actually a pretty boring version of Silent Night, if you're looking for musicianship. However, it is haunting in its own way, as are most of Enya's songs. She can sure make a simple chord progression, with simple accompaniment, sound more interesting than what one would expect.

The other songs on the single are standard Enya fare -- not Christmas songs, as far as I can tell -- and are actually more interesting than "Silent Night," by way of having more varied and lively instrumentation.

4.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Lullabye, December 8, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Oiche Chiun (Silent Night) [Maxi Single] (Audio CD)
For me this is the most beautiful presentation of Silent Night I have heard. In her tradmark way, Enya has given us a peaceful, sweet and lyrical version of this song. It is after all a lullabye.

I only wish there were more Christmas songs, in Enya's classical style, on this CD.
