World Music Lovers Awake!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Ojah Awake (Audio CD)
Afro and Caribbean rythyms fill the works of Osibisa, aknowledged as a major inspiration for the popularity of world music. From the funny "Coffee Song" to lively danceable "Dance the Body Music," etc., and mellow works this album is one you will want to listen to over and over again. There is also a mystical sound to many of the pieces. People who hear the cd want seem to want a copy of their own.

OSIBISA at their Best,
By Lucky Boy (Woodland, CA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Ojah Awake [Vinyl] (Vinyl)
Osibisa's eighth album, Ojah Awake, is also the best in IMHO. This was the Ghanaian group's great commercial success in their adopted home of Great Britain and all over the former British colonies. This big-selling album spawned three big hits: the Brazilian samba-flavored "The Coffee Song" (previously, would you believe it ever? was also recorded by the Andrews Sisters, Rosemary Clooney, and Frank 'Blue Eyes' Sinatra) and the disco hit "Dance the Body Music." However, IMHO "The Warrior" is the best song on this album!! I would get this album for this track alone!! This is Osibisa's most slickly-made commercial record, with Gerry Bron's glossy production smoothing out the free jazz influences that had peeked around the corners of earlier Osibisa gems like Woyaya. Teddy Osei and company keep the rock and funk influences as a flavoring, not a main dish, and the exciting, potent highlife of the title track or "The Warrior" is among the group's best work. This is an excellent album for anyone who enjoys the 'old' Santana! Newcomers to Afro-pop could also check out Thomas Mapfumo or Fela Kuti or even Lucky Dube. I recommend this album to all lovers of music African, East, West, North or South. Jambo!!!
