Choosing an LED based printer over a laser based printer is a personal choice. Each technology uses a completely different dither pattern. Laser printers tend to produce a more "feathered" dither - which some people like and think looks better. LED printers produce a more "crisp" dither more akin to offset printing - which I personally prefer.

The C5500n is a great LED based printer. I purchased mine as a floor model close out from a local office supply store at a discount. It replaced my current C5200n. The toner used in the C5500n and C5800ldn is different from that used in the previous generation 5100/5200/5300 units. Colors appear a bit more vivid with the new toner.

My first print job was 600 fliers for a silent auction at church - each w/ 16 photos and descriptions. The printing took about 30 minutes including loading more paper. Everyone was impressed with the fliers. I compared the printouts from the C5200n and the C5500n and noticed the standard dither is a bit finer on the C5500n but still noticeable. (The standard on the C5500n is similar to the "best" quality on the C5200n.)

Don't buy this printer to print digital photos for the relatives. Keep a nice inkjet for that. DO buy this printer for anything you want to print in color on plain paper and have look nice. Things like fliers, menus, brochures, etc. are the sweet spot for these kinds of printers.

This is a very good LED printer. We had it at work for 2 years now and it hardly had any problems. The only problem we had was that the component failed and it couldn't print for a while. Oki did send us a replacement in two days. We print averagely 5,000 pages a month, so it only failed once, which is already a very good record to us.

Overall, we are very happy with the printer because it prints excellent quality black and white copies. The color prints are also very nice. We especially like the "glossy" finish this printer has. It makes everything we print looks very visually pleased and expensive.

We purchased this printer from Staples and used to buy the supplies from Office Depot. Amazon sometimes have the drums and toners in stock, so we also buy the supplies from Amazon to save some costs. The average cost for printing per page is considerably lower than a lot of laser printers out there.

I recently bought the Okidata C5500 to replace the dying $300 color laser printer I had. I was happy with the old one, but came across the Oki for a price that couldn't be beat (less than $250 at a closeout sale) and decided to go with it. I am so happy I did. The price for the consumables is very similar to what I had been paying for the cheaper printer, so the cost to operate it is much the same, but the quality is way better!

I use the printer to print our weekly bulletins at church and also the color brochures for our small business. The color is bright and crisp, text is clear and easy to read.

Would I buy it again? In a heartbeat! Would I blink at paying the full retail price for it? No, not since I've seen it in action and put it through it's paces myself. It is well worth the price difference between it and the one I had previously. I am very happy with it!

This is a business class machine with a 60,000 page/month duty cycle, and you can certainly tell it behaves differently than other light duty printers. The solid build, the powerful but quiet fans, the automatic self-calibration, and the thoughtful design all contribute to the professional caliber of the Oki C5500n.

It produces beautiful prints in color and black. The output is shiny, so it looks like it came from commercial printer. It works perfectly with Mac OS X 10.5.3, just make sure you follow the exact order of the installation instructions (turn both machines off, connect cables, turn printer on first, then turn on computer, then install driver, then manually add the Oki printer in System Settings).

We bought it for our small church, and from our experience, we highly recommend it.

Update (Sept. 5,2008) The Oki C5500 continues to work with the Mac OS X 10.5.4 update.

I've had a 5500N for about 2 years now, with fairly light use. Having printed about 15,000 pages, I was getting messages saying that it was time to replace the black drum (there are 4; it is a CMYK printer). A replacement drum is about $90. Clearly, the other three would follow soon.

I bought a refurbished unit for less than the price of two drums. Four toner cartridges and four drums would cost about the same as the printer, which is 3 times the cost of the refurbished unit. I went for the latter thinking that I could use the parts alone if needed.

The printer came in a plain brown box, perfectly securely shipped and taped, just as if new. All the usual manuals, cords, etc were present. I decided to use the new printer and put my old one in the storage area (it has two almost new toners and would do well as a backup in case of need.) The new one is in use now for a month with no problems.

I only found one minor weakness. Due to its age, the CD didn't have drivers for Windows Vista or Windows 7. However, they were easy to find at the OKI support site and installed with no trouble.

I can recommend this printer without reservation and can also say that I am quite happy with my refurbished unit.

Bought this printer refursbished from Tiger Direct for $[...] and WOW what a surprise.

1) Packaged and Like new condition.
2) Ease of setup out of the box and for internet.
3) Features of this printer blow the competitor (Samsung CLP-315W ).No compresison.
4) Easy and nice led features on the printer allow you to see and configure the printer right there verses the the pc which I didnt want.
5) Also has a nice Power Saver mode that you can configure or keep off.

Bottom line is for a refurbed unit.. This item smokes.. As someone told me is this... Oscar Meyer makes weiners,, if you like weiners buy oscar. If it doesnt matter then buy walmart brand. I prefer to buy a name brand that someone has been doing for sometime.. Get the point..

Excellent printer and very very happy.

This is the second OkiData C5500N I have purchased. When the first ran out of toner I went to Staples and found the printer on sale cheaper the buying the toner so I bought the printer and boxed up the older one. The image quality is great. Two months out of the one year warranty the new printer quit working and OkiData will not fix it.

Yes, it's a one year warranty but two months out and it's broken beyond repair? Toner drums are "old" and not working properly according to the local OkiData repair guy. Build a quality product OkiData, not one that is designed to fail as soon as you are no longer liable. Did you get the GM business plan?

I will never buy another OkiData Product.

This prints a beautiful flyers for small businesses. It is glossy and looks professional. It prints fast and is fairly quiet. Unfortunately, they stopped making it!!!

Paid around $500 for this printer more than three years ago, and no major problems.
Have printed 7,000 plus copies, and am very happy with the print quality.
I quit buying my replacement cartridges from Staples, and now buy from <...> for around $28 each.
Have had zero technical issues with it. Paper jams occur from time to time, but think it may be paper quality or weight issues.
Cartridges are very easy to access / replace.
I'd highly recommend this printer to anyone.

We have this printer in the office where I work and I just had to get one for home. This printer is the perfect startup to my business. With the quality of this printer, I will be able to charge my customers great rates and guarantee anything that is printed with this machine. Very satisfied.
