I was very confused reading the reviews (doesn't amplify) and the product description ("really works" "amplifies"), so here's the scoop:
When you press the green star, it works like a microphone, it amplifies. When you push the yellow record button, it amplies as the kid records his voice. When you use the music button, however, the music plays through the speaker and therefore it can't amplify the kids voice also. Doesn't seem to bother my kids. Regardless, the best part of this microphone for my son (4) is that it records his & plays his voice with the easy push of two buttons. That's what he uses it for all day long and loves it. It is quite pricey and doesn't look like an expensive toy, so I'm not sure about giving it as a present, but it's a great buy for your own kids. Update: Target carries these now at a discount.

I bought this for my son a year ago, when he was about 2. He loves it! He does a cute little "rocker" dance and sings skip to my lou. He's taken it to his school, and his friends (up to age 6) love it, too.
I like that: -It doesn't amplify. I know that's a sticking point for some, but I think the less noise, the better. The kids don't seem to care. Also, the overall volume of the mic is appropriate for kids, not too loud. -It records. This is a cute feature, and very novel for the kids. -It isn't "commercial." I was looking for another one of these mics at Target for one of his friends for her birthday since she loves to play with his - couldn't find it, could only find Hannah Montana and other licensed stuff. I prefer to keep the expensive licensing stuff out of our lives for as long as I can (realistically, I know it isn't long - but I'm enjoying it while it lasts). -The songs can be slowed or sped up - good for younger kids still learning the words, and fast is good for older kids goofing around (includes Skip to My Lou, If You're Happy and You Know It, London Bridge, and Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes). -Buttons easy for kids to use, batteries seem to last. No real drawbacks I've seen, and we've had it awhile. Seems sturdy. Should be priced around $15, I think that's what I paid but maybe I caught a sale.

I gave the Sing-Along Mike to my granddaughter for her third birthday. She was thrilled with it and abandoned all her other gifts to play with it! Before I wrapped it I recorded a short message to wish her Happy Birthday and she was very surprised to hear my voice when she pressed the button. She quickly learned how to play the music and sing along to the familiar songs. She also picked up on how to record and was singing and conducting interviews right away.
The package was shipped and I received it in a prompt manner. It is well made for the price, battery is easy to insert, no small pieces to deal with, easy to store and play with when the mood strikes. This gift was a hit!

My 2 year old loves this microphone. I got one for $.50 at a yard sale and it's been a hit. The only problem is that I think the part that keeps the batteries snug so they work has gotten loose and the microphone sometimes doesn't work. So I decided to get her another one since she loves it so much. I couldn't believe how much these stores on Amazon are charging for it. How crazy! I just found it at Target for $8.99!!!!!!! Shop around!

This microphone is great for kids! Let me explain it...
1. One of the buttons on the microphone plays pre-recorded songs, like Twinkle Twinkle Little Star. Every time you press it, another song pops out! I forgot how many songs there are, but there are close to 8. 2. There is a button to record your voice and play your recording! This is the heart of this microphone. 3. There is a button that looks like a star. The company claims that clicking and hoding the star will amplify your voice. Yes, maybe your voice is amplified 5%, but your voice does not sound "amplified" at all. This is why this microphone got 4 stars instead of 5. This microphone would be better off without the star thing! My children fiddled around with this button for weeks, trying to find out what it did! (We did find out what they did, after we found the instructions! 4. There is a volume control thing at the end of the microphone, but it is cleverly disguised as a part of the microphone. My children discovered this "volume control knob" almost three weeks after they got the product! (Well, I guess we should have read the instructions first!) 5. We actually ordered two of these, one as a present. One came in Orange and one came in Blue. So you never know what color microphone you may get if you order on Amazon like we did!

I read all the reviews and didn't think that the lack of amplification would be a big problem. This went into my cart because of the sale price just before Christmas, and the fact that Liam loves all things musical. We were not disappointed.
It comes with batteries loaded, but I replaced them immediately, thinking that might have been why the amplification button didn't work and the music was barely audible. I should have read the instructions first - I was completely unaware that the base of the microphone turns and controls volume! It turns out that a kid can figure this out before an adult. The trick to amplification is to put your mouth right up to the top of the microphone. Don't try to sing an inch away. Don't try to sing from the side. You practically have to stick it in your mouth - just like a kid would - and it works! And the kids loved it. Liam is 2, and marches around and sings nonsense into the microphone while the songs play. Older kids will love the recording feature. The tempo (speed) button seems to make little difference. I appreciated that the microphone comes with a little booklet with the words to the songs so I can teach them properly - classics in danger of being lost amid all the commercial TV shows kids watch now. (Barney's "I love you, you love me" will never go down in history as a classic like "Skip to my Lou".) The packaging is really cool. Even though it's not Christmasy, I used the reversible shell as the wrapping paper. Then you use the attached pull ribbon to slide the box out of the shell.

The main reason for buying the microphone was to let first-grade students use the voice amplification feature while giving presentations. The mike helps them focus, and the amplification was supposed to make them easier to hear. The amplifier isn't very loud and is not really good for much. The voice recording is clever and would be fun for children.

I purchased a Sing-Along Mike for my 2.5 yr old grandaughter expecting it to be able to amplify her voice. There is very little amplification. I called Parents & they readily replaced it & the replacement also has little amplification. The other functions work & she does play with it some.

My son got this gift when he was 14 months, and he liked listening to the songs it makes and generally playing around with it. Then my friend's 5 year old was at our house and she spent hours singing along with the pre-recorded songs as well as recording and listening back to her own voice - she had a blast! I'm impressed that this toy can entertain kids of such broad ages and it's interesting for kids to hear their own voices. It's a clever, reasonably-priced and creative toy - I recommend giving it as a gift as well as for one's own child.

The toy is very good. My 18 month old daughter loves it; as did my son growing up. But once you change the batteries (3 AAA) the volume of the built-in (pre-recorded songs) drops to barely audible. Durability is questionable. Audio quality is scratchy, but the kids love it...
