5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Memories of Home, August 18, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Okinawa Folk Songs Collection (Audio CD)
I ordered this cd and it was delivered today. I purchased it for my mother, who is Okinawan and has been living with Parkinson's disease for almost 2 yrs. I cannot express my gratitude at having this cd available on Amazon...my father played it for my Mom this afternoon and for the first time in many months, she laughed and smiled. It brought great joy to her. In a time when we are living one moment to the next, this cd was able to bring my mother the happiness that I have been looking to give her for some time. These songs also remind me of my youth and they bring me comfort as well. Thank you Amazon!

When I hear these tunes I think about the joyous dancing of my Grandparents when I was a little kid. What a stange, a little annoying and yet familiar music it was for me then as it is now. I remember with nostalgia going to the All-Okinawa summer picnics in June at Griffith Park with this music being played live from a bandstand and being introduced to countless 4th and 5th cousins. The pleasant memories of watermelon, dango, nigiri and twanging samisen, (the old Okinawan banjo, as me and my sisters used to call it), are still with me. I just took it for granted that this music would be present at familly gatherings forever, but as the first generation old timers pass, the cultural tie to that little island seems to fade. I made it a point that when my son was born, that I would purchase this collection of tunes. It is my hope that even though my grandfather left Okinawa a hundred years ago, that this music will sound a little strange, a little annoying and a little familiar for my own son.

5.0 out of 5 stars A truly great CD, October 10, 2001

This CD may be a risk for some as there is no English anywhere: none on the album cover, on the CD, or in the notes. But unless you understand Japanese and find that the lyrics are no good, there is a chance you won't regret making the investment. Everyone whom I have played it for thinks it strange at first, but then they are taken over by the up-sounding instruments, catchy but not annoying melodies, and funny percussion and voices. There are some duets and some solos on the album. The duets are my favorites. The voices are a bit high-pitched and unpleasant for some of my audiences, but not for most, especially listeners who are already turned on to Eastern music. Based on my limited world music exposure, I'd say it's a cross between Chinese opera music and American cajun music: can you imagine that? Whether you agree or not, it's a truly great CD.
