5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference for the novice, February 12, 2001
By A Customer
I just moved into my first house with a yard and now have to figure out how to take care of it. This book was heavily recommended by the local nurseries, friends and the county extension office. I now know why. It has nice, although small, color pictures of all the plants the author highlights. I really appreciate the author's willingness to speak his mind about certain plants and techniques. It's also very good that the book is specific to Oklahoma since many books spend time on plants that just can not handle red clay, 110 degree summers, drought, 10 degree winters and steady 25 mph winds - and that's just the months of September and October!

The book is a great reference although I ended up reading it cover to cover. It's very easy even for me to understand. It has a fine index for finding things later. The only complaint, and it is minor, is the size of the photographs. They are only thumbnail sized and kind of tough to see. But, I have other books that give me good pictures for cross-reference.

This book together with Heat Zone Gardening are my main references.

4.0 out of 5 stars AKA: The Idiot's Guide To Oklahoma Gardening., April 11, 2000
By A Customer
If you live in or around the prairie areas of Oklahoma, you probably know about the diverse conditions we have and how difficult your gardening can be. Well, here's the answer. Given to me by my landscaping brother at Christmas, the Oklahoma Gardener's Guide : The What, Where, When, How & Why of Ornamental Gardening in Oklahoma has been very helpful to me, a novice gardener at best. Full of ideas about trees, shrubs, vines and flowers, it helped me decide what would work in my landscape. "A-Ha" was my expression as I quickly discovered why things I had tried in the past had failed. Easy to understand and accompanied by full-color thumbnail pictures, it gave me a blueprint to go by. I even carried my bookmarked copy to the nursery when I picked out new spring plants and trees. The bottom line... it works. Now I'm planting with success. This Oklahoma author has done his homework. You should benefit from it.

Great book for us that are new to the wonders of gardeing in Oklahoma. There are tips on plants that can handle windy conditions, drought and blistering sun but will come back after the blizzards of winter.
I also like the symbols that tell the plants attributes such as fragrance, attracts bees or birds or butterflies, native plants, etc.
This book goes with me on plant shopping trips.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Gardening Book, March 21, 2008
This review is from: Oklahoma Gardener's Guide: Revised Edition (Gardener's Guides) (Paperback)
This is the best book I have ever found on OK landscape/planting. I have used it to plan grant funded work in public areas like schools, around my house, and have recommended it to Scouts working on their Eagle projects. It's very user friendly and full of useful information and pictures. Don't let the title fool you into thinking it is just about gardening--it covers trees, shrubs, flowers, and grasses.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great, but not "Gardening for Dummies", July 3, 2006

One of the other reviewers said that this was essentially a "gardening for dummies" book. Definitely not true. It is a very helpful reference book, but I would not consider it a "how to" book, except perhaps to start your lawn. Not that it's not a good book...I'm glad to have it, but I still have no clue as to where to start with my landscaping.

At last an excellent Oklahoma Garden's Guide. Steve Dobbs did a great job listing the various plants for your garden in OK. Great hardiness zone selection...that's a real help. Info on how big the plant/tree will be, height, how much sun needed, soil type, does it need lots of maintenance, water and fertilizer needs. Lots of great colorful pictures. Really a well done book.

I was very impressed by the hardiness zone information allowing you to plant the right plant that will survive the different degrees of coldness.I had bought another OK gardening plants book and the zone information was not included. This book is perfect.

We live in the far Western Panhandle of OK. Its rugged with hard winters sometimes below -10F and hot summers sometimes above 100F with year round precipitation less than 16 inches. So its very important to be able to pick the right plants that can survive in this sometimes brutal climate and be able to pick plants that will survive the first early frosts. Its a lot different than far Eastern OK.
People living in the very different climate zones in OK will be able to find plants and trees for their climate zones in this book.

In the book I found plenty of plants and a few trees that can survive and prosper in the far Western Panhandle of OK. Finally found the right book...I love it! Also in the book there are plants that will attract hummingbirds and butterflies. I've seen a few hummingbirds and want to attract more plus more butterflies. 5 stars

I planted my first flower bed this spring, and I really wish I'd had this book beforehand. It's a great guide for beginners, but my grandmother the gardening pro also loves it. Perfect for anyone who wants to plant in Oklahoma.

I have really enjoyed reading about various plants and their needs. This is my first gardening season in Oklahoma so it was enlightening to understand some of the various care and needs of things already in my garden but also for things to put into my gardens in the future.
