Book Description

September 1, 2010
Oklahoma is well known as prime hunting and fishing territory, but red-dirt country also offers many opportunities for hiking, running, and off-road biking. Though trail guides for neighboring states abound, outdoorsmen Kent F. Frates and Larry Floyd found no such book for Oklahoma. The outcome of their collaboration, Oklahoma Hiking Trails, fills that void as the first comprehensive guidebook for the state.

A welcome addition to the travel library of both locals and visitors, this illustrated guide extends a hearty welcome to hikers, bikers, runners, birders, campers, and photographers. For the amateur and expert alike, Oklahoma Hiking Trails covers trails accessible to the public across the state.

This handy reference will take outdoor adventurers from Tulsa to Lawton and from Broken Bow to Boise City and all points between. It includes such familiar sites as the Ouachita National Forest and the Wichita Mountains as well as lesser-known gems such as Black Mesa and the Oxley Nature Center. The authors also provide tips on how to prepare for any hiking adventure.

Color photographs of trail sites identify landmarks to look for and highlight the natural diversity to be found along the state s hundreds of miles of public trails. Detailed maps, GPS coordinates, and clear directions ensure that the runner, biker, or hiker will get to the trail and stay on it. Each trail is rated easy, moderate, or strenuous. Providing a wealth of information to help you navigate your Oklahoma adventure, Oklahoma Hiking Trails offers big returns in a small, light-weight package ideal for your backpack.

5.0 out of 5 stars Long awaited and much appreciated., August 20, 2010

Oklahoma has some great places to hike, but other than a few of the more well-known trails, it has been hard to figure out where to go, how to get there, and how to even find the trail once one is there. For someone who thought she knew the best places, I was surprised to learn about a bunch of trails I now want to hike. This book is one of the good kinds of hiking guides in that it has trails of all lengths and difficulties in both urban and rural settings, covers the state (even up to the tippy tip of the panhandle), has great maps, and, most important, really detailed trail descriptions so one doesn't get lost and can enjoy the hike. A great tool for folks who think they know a lot about hiking in Oklahoma and those who want to explore it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Must have for any Okie Trail User, September 23, 2010

Compared with trail guides for Oklahoma, this one is of course 5 out of 5, since there isn't anything else out there that could be considered "state-wide". I pre-ordered this book because I was eager to see what was in it. Compared to other trail books for other states/regions, I would give it a 4.5 out of 5.0 - there's a lot of detail but at the same time I would have liked to have seen total elevation change and more description of the longer trails. I've been on several of the trails in the book and felt some of the highlights of the trails themselves were left out. But on the other hand, the topo's are welcome, the gps coordinates a big plus, and the trails are clearly marked on the maps. All in all, a very solid effort that I'm happy to carry with me as I travel across Oklahoma. If you only get one book on Oklahoma Trails, toss the regional books and get this state-wide book, it's put together better than most.

5.0 out of 5 stars Oklahoma has trails? Oh yeah., November 10, 2010
This review is from: Oklahoma Hiking Trails (Paperback)
There are more trails in Oklahoma than I ever knew and I've spent 40 years hiking on various trails around the state. The trail reviews that I do know were well done with a nice amount of detail and maps to show where to go. I was surprised just how many trails are in the state. Many of these trails are combination hiking/biking trails, but that's all right. The book is professionally done with good photographs, which I wish were captioned, and a lack of typographical mistakes that I've seen at times in books like this. Can't wait to hit some new trails.
