Grade 4 Up These books are a poor attempt to capitalize on a video production, and they suffer from a distracting format. As an introduction to general information about the state, North Carolina succeeds. However, the social history includes lifestyles of several residentstwo ``urban pioneers'' who restore inner city homes; a furniture designer and an upholsterer who work as a teamall somewhat interesting to adults, but not to children doing a report. Another distracting element: the typeface of the first page of each chapter is in larger print than the rest of the chapter. Although Oklahoma has interesting information about the general history of the state and native American population, the lack of other pertinent geographical information (land, climate, government) makes it a mediocre choice for children doing state reports. Also, such generalizations as ``People in Oklahoma smile. They shake your hand'' lack substance. Both books have a conglomeration of quotes, text, and photographs. Taken directly from the publisher's ``Video Encyclopedia'' series, the still photographs from the video transfer poorly to a book. Many of the photos are grainy and choppy (several are of people cut out of their original backgrounds and pasted onto a new background). Fradin's North Carolina: in Words and Pictures (1980) and Oklahoma: in Words and Pictures (1981) and Carpenter's North Carolina (1979) and Oklahoma (1979, all Childrens) are better choices, with Carpenter's books being more complete for children needing in-depth geographical information. This "Portrait of America" series, in my opinion, has been a fairly reliable source of information for elementary school students needing to do research reports on any of the 50 states. And while this installment, "Oklahoma", doesn't succeed as well as some of the others, it is still very valuable. It is crisply written, and very accessible to young students, who should gain a lot from this book.
