Wonderful Romantic Musical,
By A Customer
This review is from: Oklahoma!: From The Soundtrack Of The Motion Picture (1955 Film) (Audio CD)
I think it's a very touching Romantic Music. The songs want you to get up and dance. Even though I'm 9 and a half I still know that it has wonderful Music. If you like this music you will like other Rodgers and Hammerstiens Music such as Carousal,King and I and Sound of Music. Thank you for reading my review and bye.

OKLAHOMA! was on best selling lists for years. It seems that everyone who grew up with LPs during 50s and 60s had a copy. It is the best recorded version of the show. JONES, McGRAE and the rest were all great. As is the full bodied Oscar winning scoring by Jay Blackton (although one wonders what someone like Alfred Newman would have done with this score). One of the earliest 12 inch stereo Lps unfortunatly has its downside. Because of space limitations some songs are edited. Other selections (reprises, finale, etc)are excluded all together. It would be wonderful if the original tracks could be recovered and a new expanded release be prepared. It would easily fill a 70 minute cd.

Classic Rodgers & Hammerstein is classic!,

Although this collection contains only the songs of this classic film it is tremendous. Each song has been re-edited from the original tapes to get the best quality possible. The results are excellent. Shirley Jones and Gordon MacRae sound breathtaking. The opening number is the Oveture, and boy does it take you right there (Oklahoma). Gordon MacRae sings the great "Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin'" next and he never sounded better. My favorite song, "Surrey With A Fringe On Top," blew me away when I heard it. At the intro of the song, hoofsteps can be heard, what a great idea. The other classic songs are all included, to make the album complete. The end rounds out with the show-stoppin' title track, "Oklahoma." If you like R & H, or Shirley Jones and Gordon MacRae, or just classic musicals, you just can't pass this one up, despite the omission of the instrumental stuff.

Oklahoma! as a film was quite entertaining, but the record could include only small portions of some songs, such as Kansas City and Out of my Dreams. As presented in the film these numbers were great.

Mellow, sumptuously sung recording of a classic score.,

Jay Blackton's orchestrations and the TODD-AO six track sound deservedly won Oscars in this exceptionally sung recording. The score is mellow and beautifully recorded. The need to edit the numbers to fit on 78 rpm and 45 rpm sides as well as LP means less music than usual with soundtracks but it is a wonderful earful nonetheless.

An all-time great movie soundtrack,
By New England Pat (Virginia, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Oklahoma!: From The Soundtrack Of The Motion Picture (1955 Film) (Audio CD)
The 1955 movie starring Gordon MacRae and Shirley Jones was a huge hit and it seemed as if the two became America's sweethearts overnight because of their magic chemistry in the film and on the accompanying soundtrack. Every song incuded here is a delightful tune, and besides headliners MacRae and Jones, several cast members get the opportunity to weigh in with their vocals, including, of all people, Rod Steiger. The soundtrack is more than 50 years old but somehow seems as fresh today as it did then. Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hemmerstein II gave the world an enduring classic with this wonderful music.
