4.0 out of 5 stars Okuma Nomad travel rod
The rod looks really nice and well built, but I have issues fitting the pieces together. The butt section and the middle section does not fully seat by almost 5/8 of an inch. Additionally, the medium tip does not fully seat by almost 3/8 of an inch, though the medium-heavy tip fully seats to the mid-section. I contacted Okuma service when I first got the item, they tried...

5.0 out of 5 stars Travel Rod Joints are oversized, June 11, 2011
I have this & 3 Balzar products. They have enough air miles on them to get a free trip anywheres. These ferrules do not fit flush. I presume it is to allow for long term wear. It in no ways compromises the integrity of the rod's flex strength. I have hooked up fish up to 100 lbs on the light action salt water version, trolled with it & landed a 55 lb sting ray with no problems. My equipment is typically superior to the charter's.

5.0 out of 5 stars impressed, December 30, 2011

Let me start by saying i am very impressed with okumas quality.I purchased this rod (7' h/m) to take on a fishing trip to Hawaii along with a avet lx raptor reel 80# braid 60# mono , the alps reel seat is very solid as is the hole rod . largest fish landed was a 120# + ahi tuna. using the heavy tip and this rod didnt even flinch, having to use a chair because of conditions it performed well the gimbal took a beating (weather conditions) but had just one little scratch .the guides were smooth with both braid and mono. Boat crew was absolutly impressed with the rod then were floored to find out it was a three piece. oh ya and the travel part no problems goes carry on . hope this helped thanks

5.0 out of 5 stars Great travel rod, December 12, 2011

I bought the L-M/L model to take to the East Cape of Mexico last August. Rod worked better than expected. Landed tuna to 100lbs, nice rooster fish and small dorado. Casts well and comes in a nice small case for traveling. Like other reviews point out, where it slides together does not seat flush, as much as a 1/2 inch. It didn't affect performance. I used a Avet JX 2 spd, 65lb braid, with short top shot to 60lb depending on what we were targeting. Next year I plan on getting the M-M/H model to take along. Hope this helps.

1. This is the CASTING rod. Not the spinning rod. So you may be on the wrong item like I was. It's even in the title :)

2. These are the off-shore series and there is nothing "light" about them. I should have realized after looking at them on the Okuma website. 10-17lbs is not the "Light" I'm used to. The butts are quite thick and heavy duty, even on the lightest model. You're talking Jigging/trolling/Live baiting/ Light game with these.

3. What you may be after is the "Inshore" versions (I was): [...]

4. The "European Spigot Ferrule connection" does throw you off at first, particularly as everyone is used to the traditional connections where the hollow sheath of the tip sections connect over the hollow base sections. This rod has the tip sections slotting over a solid inner blank. As a few people have mentioned, it does not slide all the way down, leaving gaps between the sections that look "unfinished" or that shouldn't be exposed. I doubt this makes any difference apart from aesthetics, as there's certainly enough crossover in the joins to ensure it's not compromised.

5. Zip quality is kind of poor on the case.

However, the proof is in the usage, and this will not see any action. It's on it's way back to Amazon whilst I order the inshore spinning version. [...]

5.0 out of 5 stars Have Rod & Traveled., August 9, 2011

This is my 4th Okuma Nomad. I bought this for the Solterra Reel I have. I took it to Maine last week & caught over 30 Cod at 100-300' catching 5 double hook ups. The rod works well for jigging. A big selling point is portability & two tip options. I plan to take this to Aruba for some deep water trolling. Sturdy product & bullet proof in Saltwater. Check out the Inshore series Nomads. These rods perform as well as 1 or 2 piece rods.

4.0 out of 5 stars Impressive, June 22, 2011

I've come to really like Okuma brand fishing!

I wanted to get a light duty saltwater rod that could also stand up to some medium action out on the seas. I also needed it to be somewhat portable, so after doing some searching online - I narrowed it down to the Okuma Nomad. I also own an okuma trio reel paired with a c3 rod that I use for trout fishing - i love that too! So I had pretty high expectations for this rod.

Upon opening the box and playing around with the rod for a bit, my first impressions are that this is a great quality rod. Looks and feels fantastic. As another reviewer stated, the connections joints don't meet flush (up to 1/2 inch, depending how much force you want to use to jam it in there), but I don't think that will inhibit the rod's performance overall. It's light and feels great under my arm. Also Amazon has the best price on the L/ML rod that I've seen anywhere! Paired with my Okuma Clarion I hope this rod will serve me for the rest of my fishing years, certainly so if/when I travel and there's fishing opportunities. I may sound a bit like an Okuma fanboy, but I'm also a realist - If I notice any negative sides to this rod after i take her out, I'll update my review.
