Book Description

April 5, 2005

5.0 out of 5 stars I'm not a Spanish literature expert, but Ramos makes some undeniable points....., June 5, 2011

This review is from: La Ola Latina: Como los Hispanos Estan Transformando la Politica en los Estados Unidos (Spanish Edition) (Paperback)
.....about the political tidal wave Hispanics are creating in the U.S. I translate as I read (a terrible habit), and I was a writing major in college, so I'll quote one of his excellent points, from p. 140, in English:

As you may have noticed, I use the terms "Hispanic" and "Latino" interchangeably. But in California, people prefer the term "Latino", as they do in Chicago. In Florida and Texas "Hispanic" is usually used. Actually, most Hispanics or Latinos that I know don't use those words at all to describe themselves. They say they are Mexican, or Cuban, or Puerto Rican, or Colombian or Mexican-American. Saying "I'm Latino" or "I'm Hispanic" groups us all together. By contrast, identifying your country of origin ("I'm Salvadoran," or "I'm from the Dominican Republic") personalizes us. It defines us as individuals, not as a group.
