Olaf Baer is one my favorite Lieder singers and this mid-price 4 CD set is one of the treasures of my rich record collection. This set contains recordings from various stages of Baer's career, catching his velvety voice wonderfully. His interpretations are rather emotional than rational and they are full of surprising new insights. This EMI set can be wholeheartedly recommended to anybody starting a Schubert collection, especially that it contains all three song cycles (Die Schone Muellerin, Schwanengesang and Winterreise) plus a selection of favorite Lieder. Lieder fans who are not familiar with Baer's singing should by all means try this set, and those who know the sweetness of his voice from other recordings should buy this generous sampler without hesitation. Bear is really one of the greatest Lieder singers of our times and these four CDs show why. By the way, Geaoffrey Parson's accompaniment is a marvel!
