Book Description

February 1, 2002 4 and up
Old Beaver is tired. The logs seem to grow heavier, and it takes him longer to fell a tree. So, when Old Beaver stops building dams, the animals decide to replace him with a new younger, stronger beaver. But the forest animals soon discover that wisdom and experience are every bit as important as youth and strength. Is it too late, or can they find Old Beaver and convince him to help?

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

reSchool-Grade 2-Respecting the wisdom and experience of the elderly is brought home in this gentle tale. Old Beaver has reached the point in his life when he'd rather rest in the sun than fell trees and build dams. The other animals grow concerned at this change and agree with Owl, who feels that "A proper forest needs a beaver who builds proper dams!" Upon hearing of plans to bring in a replacement, Old Beaver decides to leave the forest. When the young, strong beaver arrives, it is obvious that though he is eager he does not have the skills necessary to build a good dam. The animals realize they need their old friend's knowledge and training to help maintain the forest and river ecology. To the satisfaction of all, Old Beaver returns to partner with the newcomer. The soft watercolor illustrations mostly in blues, browns, and greens depict a friendly forest inhabited by otters, bears, rabbits, frogs, squirrels, mice, and a variety of birds. A pleasant lesson about recognizing strengths in others.

4.0 out of 5 stars A nicely illustrated story, October 28, 2002

This review is from: Old Beaver (Hardcover)
A very nicely done story with a few minor flaws (the young beaver could've tried a couple more times before asking for help I suppose) but despite that it does reenforce the message that there is a place for old experienced folks to help young people starting out- now if only the young people would start to listen!

Beautifully illustrated too!
