THE OLD CURIOSITY SHOP
No other author is as adept as Charles Dickens at making characters leap from the pages of his novels, and The Old Curiosity Shop is no exception. An intricate tapestry of good and evil, its main character is a kindhearted man who is haunted by the vices within him. In this splendid new adaptation, Peter Ustinov plays the lovable old shopkeeper who lives with his granddaughter, Nell, in turn-of-the-century England. The old man has borrowed heavily from his evil landlord, Daniel Quilp. When Quilp discovers his tenant has been throwing the money away at the gaming tables, Quilp takes possession of the shop and threatens to have the old man thrown in the madhouse. Nell and her grandfather are forced to flee London. So begins their epic journey through the English countryside.
THE INHERITANCE
At the lush Evenswood estate in Concord, Massachusetts, Edith Adelon (Cari Shayne), a beautiful orphan, lives as the paid companion to the daughter of the wealthy Hamilton family, although they regard her as one of their own. Years ago, Henry Hamilton (Tom Conti) saved Edith from an Italian orphanage at the request of his long-deceased brother. Now, Edith is his daughter Amy's (Brigitta Dau) prized friend and confidante. As the Hamiltons await a trio of visitors for the annual Greens Cup horse race, Beatrice Hamilton (Meredith Baxter) asks for Edith's help in finding a suitable husband for a cousin, Ida Glenshaw (Brigid Walsh Brannagh), with one of two visiting eligible bachelors. But when it becomes clear that both the young men have affection for Edith and not Ida, jealousy soon develops, leading to malicious conniving and brutal backstabbing. Despite the growing love between Edith and one of the young suitors, because of their conflicting social classes, the couple is reminded time and again that their love can never be. The Inheritance is a story that centers on an innocent young woman's struggle to make sense of her position within the Hamilton household and in society, and the love she feels for her patrons, as well as for a young man she can never marry.

A nice family oriented film which we enjoyed. I can see the Disney effect as it has been unnaturally prettied up. It is typical Charles Dickens.

It was interesting to see Peter Ustinov in this piece. I have always enjoyed watching his acting characterizations, and this was no exception. I was surprised, however, at his actor-choices. Many of his scenes left me feeling that he wasn't really "there." It's a sad little, valiant little story and this version wasn't really all that memorable. The price was right on this compilation, though: two films by major writers (the other was from Louisa May Alcott - The Inheritance) for about $7.00! In that sense, rather a good purchase!
