An album of substance...,
By TGC (New Mexico) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Old Devils (Audio CD)
First off, anyone who has followed Langford's career realizes that this person truly fits the cliche of "Renaissance Man" for his prolific and varied endeavors. That said, the music on this album reflects much of the rich textures of Langford's recorded catalog."1234Ever" (reportedly written because his son's recent foray into the Ramones), "Getting Used to Uselessness" (dedicated to both the whole Bush administration and the whole England World Cup squad), and "Luxury" jump out as new Langford standards on first listen. "Pieces of the Past", "Death Valley Day" (with lyrics like 'house is full of stuff, don't you think we have enough?'), "Haunted", "Old Devils" (devoted to a group of fellow Welshmen), and "Rivers of Ice" become rotating favorites on repeated listens. Musical styles run the spectrum from rootsy grooves, folk tales, and catchy ballads to mid-career Mekons rock. If you are looking for a complete album, this is it...there is not a cut that you feel compelled to skip... All in all, this is easily one of my favorite releases of the year.
