Since the description of these said "These Solid Copper mugs are traditionally finished: unlined and unlacquered" I was worried when they showed up with a tag that said "This item has a protective coating to retard tarnishing". So the first thing I did was put some finger prints on the inside and then rubbed a little spit on the inside. This morning I checked and while the fingerprints didn't tarnish the spit did! So theses are not coated on the inside. That is a relief!

So I now have proper mule mugs like I have always wanted and my bar is better for it.

As there is a lot of confusion in all the reviews for various Moscow mule mugs I figured I could lay down some info for folk.
1. If you are making a Moscow mule in a stainless mug, a copper plated mug with a nickle lining, a Dixie cup, etc you are not making a Moscow Mule and are actually just making Ginger Beer with vodka and a squeeze of lemon.
This is like making a Salty Dog without salting the rim of the glass thus leaving you with a greyhound instead. The contact with copper is a requirement of a Moscow Mule. While you can do things like pour your drink through a funnel full of washed pennies or drink it from a copper tube, I think these unlined mugs are just a better way to go. The last thing you want to have happen is to proudly serve all your guests Moscow Mules in nickle plated mugs and have someone's jerk date point out in front of everyone, that you have failed to actually make mules, and leave you looking stupid... who invited that guy anyway? Your sister? No Christmas card for her this year.

2. Copper drinking glasses and mugs do not keep your drinks colder. In fact they warm them faster than any other common drink ware.

These mugs were on back-order for months. I finally received the mugs today and they will be going back. Very first mug I opened is tarnished, discolored, and the "copper" appears to be missing in some places. Appears these are copper coated and the rim on the firs one opened is copper in part and then silver on other parts.

I bought the set of four. I have used one of them a half a dozen times and the supposed nickel plating inside is disappearing. Where do you think that metal is going? I can tell you where these mugs are going--back!

The whole point of using copper for a Moscow Mule is that the galvanic reaction between the copper and lime juice gives it that extra kick. With the "protective coating," you don't get that reaction. The mugs look nice but are not good for their intended use.

I see some people don't like these because they are not solid copper. The term "Solid Copper" is used correctly in this context (metal-speak). The copper used in these mugs is solid copper vs a copper-alloy, "alloy" meaning a homogenous, mixture of metals. Thus, these are solid copper with a separate nickel lining (The lining is actually considered a "Finish" in terms of metal-speak. Other copper mugs around that appear copper throughout the product are stainless steel with a copper finish). For food safe copper ware, a lining is needed. Even high quality williams-sonoma copper mugs have a lining. I have seen pure copper mugs with no linings for sale, but understand the risk of drinking an acidic drink from pure copper. Plus, these can go for double the price and require much care to keep the copper finish, otherwise the copper will patina.

I am giving these a 4/5 start because one of mine has a rim which was not sealed completely, and thus is rough on the lips and shows the solid copper and nickel parts. Otherwise, I really like to use them. They keep a drink cold, have enough space to mix a full Moscow Mule. Like most nicer products, these require care. They should be only hand-washed. Dry immediately with a soft cloth. Avoid using steel wool, steel scouring pads or harsh detergents. Exposed copper will develop a rich patina over time. To keep a exposed copper exterior looking new, use a copper polish or a combination of lemon and salt.

My wife ordered these for me as a gift. I had been raving how I wanted a set of copper cups. We were really confused with the product we received. These are not solid copper as described. They don't feel, smell, or taste of copper. I'm not sure what the inside is "lined" with. I would expect a solid copper cup to be solid copper. We will be returning them.

Am I not supposed to drink water and ice out of these cups? Towards the end of drinking something out of these cups, everyone who's tried it tastes the metal that dissolved into the liquid. We would just drink water with ice. Not to mention the outside began to get spots where the polish has faded or something. How are these rated so highly?

These were lovely mugs and I was so excited to use them. After one use the laquer coating was literally peeling off like a sunburn. Not only did that happen, but the inside tin lining has an odd texture compared to half of the inside of the mug. I don't mind the tarnishing, but to market a product that says "made to last" didn't at all. I'll be purchasing the Williams Sonoma version for better quality.
