5.0 out of 5 stars One of my favorite annual publications!

3.0 out of 5 stars not what I thought
Until I received my book, I didn't know that it was made for Boston and the East Coast. To get information for my area in the Northwest, I need to go online and purchase pages.
I am making this into a gift for someone who lives in the East.

I await the publication of each year's "The Old Farmer's Almanac." First, I enjoy checking out the weather forecast. Second, there are always quirky special articles worth looking at. And this year's version is no different!

The weather? This is something closely associated with this publication. Pages 80-81 features (a) a weather map depicting, in broad strokes, winter and summer weather. For central Pennsylvania, the winter looks to be cool and dry; summer, likewise, cool and dry. And (b) a brief narrative on what the weather looks like. Nice point: "How accurate was our forecast last winter?" The evaluation, they claim, is pretty good (although I wonder about those who examine their own predictions!).

Later (e.g., page 208), there is a more detailed analysis, region by region, for the United States. The slice of Americana from Elmira New York to Asheville, NC contains central Pennsylvania. Overall prediction? "Winter will be slightly colder and drier than normal, with below-normal snowfall."

A couple other features to illustrate the contents. . . . Starting on page 162, we have an article "Better than barebones cooking." The focus is the use of bones in cooking, such as use of bones in making stock. There is a nice recipe for a basic meat stock, complete with all the ingredients needed.

One of the chores that my brother and I did when we lived on a farm was clearing manure from the pig pens. Not one of my favorite tasks! There is in this edition of the "Almanac," an article on green versus animal manure. More than most of us want to know! Still, a nicely wrought little essay for those interested in the subject.

So, again, this annual publication does what it does. I enjoyed going through this little book one more time!

4.0 out of 5 stars Farmer's Almanac 2010 - rrm, January 1, 2010

Once again, I give high marks to the R.E. Thomas "ALMANAC." I buy it every 2 years because it is used as a reader and reference source. The book is back to its more accepted type format and layout from recent years and recognized by many as a text to be used in the home. Outside of the calendar and weather forecast, which the book is noted for, the annual articles give a flavor to the reader about things you never thought to ask about but give a clear, usually illustrative, approach to understanding them. The planetary information is of special meaning for me because of my hobby of tracking such things. If I know where to look in the sky, it all makes sense. The stories, advertisements, and planting tips are all a yearly hint as to what life is all about.

5.0 out of 5 stars STILL an old favorite!, September 3, 2009
This review is from: The Old Farmer's Almanac 2010 (Paperback)
After many years of not purchasing, I bought the newest edition of the Farmer's Almanac. I was planning to start gardening more this coming year and this is indispensable with great gardening tips, like planting dates, etc.

Make sure you check out the Farmer's Almanac company website, because they will let you download a free gardener's guide.

This is one of those great American publications that has stood the test of time; it's like buying a little piece of history. And how else can you get great reading entertainment for an entire year for less than $10?

Conclusion: Recommended, of course!

We buy this every year for my mother-in-law. It's amazing. I can't believe that the weather is more accurate than the weather channel. Maybe I should send one to those people. Anyway, she loves the gift.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Family Almanac, April 30, 2010

I bought this book only for curiosity, but I like it. If you wish to immerse yourself just for a while in the atmosphere of the old and the most traditional US countryside, this is the right book for you. In this Almanac, you can find a lot of information about calendar, food, gardening, health & home, husbandry, nature, weather and much news "with a pleasant degree of humor". Don't forget that this book is fitted for Boston and the New England states, but it got special corrections and calculations to answer for all the USA. It's also interesting the large number of astronomical calculations.

This didn't give me nearly enough gardening information. I was hoping for more specifics on planting but it was vague. Also the weather predictions weren't accurate. I won't be buying it again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome!!!, June 7, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Old Farmer's Almanac 2010 (Paperback)
As far as a review goes, there isn't anything to be specific about. When I logged onto Amazon.com to find an almanac, I knew it would be there and contain the info I was looking for. The issue on my mind was the price. I purchased the 2009 Almanac and didn't want to pay more for the 2010 Almanac than I did the 2009 almanac. The seller fit my needs and the rest is history. I will recommend to all both Amazon and the seller! Keep up the good work!

First purchase of Farmer's ALmanac. Awesome is my description for it.Basic planting, weather information as well as trivia. I gave one to a fellow-gardner at my church. Hopefully this year my carrots will be normal size instead of minis with large full tops and no bottoms.
