More About the Author

A long time ago, Tim heeded some bad advice. "You'll never make a living as a writer." So it remained a hobby for a long time. A secret one too. Who wants to admit publicly that one is a writer? Eventually he fumbled his way through. First with comic books back in the heyday of DIY alternative comics before turning to screenwriting where he actually had three movies produced from his work. But film is a tough collaborative gig where too many cooks in the kitchen produces mediocre results. Then along came the new world of ebooks and self-publishing, of rolling up one's sleeves and doing it yourself. The rest is history waiting to be written.

Tim lives in Toronto with his wife and two children.

I greatly enjoyed reading this extraordinarily well-written book. McGregor's use of (very clever) descriptive language draws the reader into his story where we meet the main character, Tilda, a forty-one-year-old wife and mother going through a bit of a mid-life crisis as she contemplates the end of a quasi-successful music career. Her husband, Shane (a most likable character), is supportive and loving and her thirteen-year-old daughter is quite rude, nasty and selfish (yep, a typical teen girl). McGregor does an exceptional job creating characters that are relatable--characters that readers can identify with.

I thought the storyline was unique and compelling. Tilda's former boyfriend, who has been dead for nearly twenty years, suddenly reappears leaving Tilda torn between her unresolved feelings for him and her love for her family. As Tilda discovers the truth about him, she becomes entangled in the madness, to her family's detriment. I never reveal spoilers, so I'll leave it at that...! I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves paranormal fiction. I wanted to savor this book while at the same time I wanted to keep reading to find out what would happen next.

One last thing: I absolutely loved how McGregor incorporated humor throughout the story in just the right areas so that his readers can better experience what his characters are feeling. For instance, I laughed out loud when Shane wonders wherefrom his teen-aged daughter, Molly, inherited her "hateful scorn and hair-trigger rage." He suspects if not Satan himself, then some lesser demon, like Baalzebub! Come on, now that was just too funny. I guarantee anyone with a pre-adolescent or adolescent child will appreciate that one!

I will certainly be reading more of McGregor's books in the near future.

I love a brillant story that just blows you away. Going into a book without any forethought is the best.
Tim McGregor's pen and twisted trails lead the reader on a path that we could travel easily.
From the first page to the last I was hooked, never a lag or dull page.

This read is so filled with whit as well of brillant deeper thoughts that I still am left with traces on my brain.
His writing nails my once teenage daughter as being a "ninja assasin of words" then to goes on with the deep meaning of music..."music doesn't go through your brain it goes to the gut first, no other art form does that." and so much more.

All the family dynamics of these characters are solid and real and anyone can relate their own lives to.
I was so content with this fast and exciting read...from the beginning to the end.

And who can not love a ending that isn't hanging you on a cliff ledge but leaves you pondering the possibilites of more in a deep and serious way. I look forward to reading more from the pen of Tim McGregor!!!

A surprise paranormal read!

I am not a big fan of vampire novels. I think the genre has been played out for a long time. That being said, every once in a while an author can use that particular plot device and build an interesting story around it. Such is the case with Tim McGregor and his "Old Flames, Burned Hands." The story is developed so intricately that it took me nearly 200 pages to realize it actually was a vampire novel. I read the book in one sitting, and I automatically added it to my "read again" list.

I've read the Twilight books. I've read the Sookie Stackhouse series of books. I watched more than my fair share of vampire movies. This book was not what you would expect from one with a vampire theme.

Molly is your typical teenager who does nothing but give her parents a hard time. Tilda and Shane are her parents. Tilda is a musician and does massage therapy on the side. Shane works outside the home. Tilda and Shane have been together almost 20 years. They met shortly after the accident that hospitalized her and killed her then boyfriend Gil. The book takes you inside their seemingly normal family life until one evening Tilda meets someone in the shadows of their yard that she hasn't seen since the accident.

I have to admit I'm not exactly sure how I feel about the book. Without giving away too much of the plot, there were times in the book when I was screaming at Tilda to just do the right thing. The book begins to get exciting when Tilda discovers this person from her past is more changed than she realizes and puts her in danger that she never expected to find herself in.

I can say that the book has somewhat of a bittersweet ending for the family.

What happens when your boyfriend dies in a car wreck and you nearly grieve yourself to death? For 20 years Tilda has tried to go on with her life as a musician, a song writer, wife and mother. After the wreck where her boyfriend Gil is presumed dead, no body could be found in the river, Tilda goes on with everything as much as possible. Fast forward to her life as a washed up guitar player, her glory days seem to be vanishing, a very inattentive husband and a teenaged daughter that you just want to jerk thru the pages of the book and whip her butt and you pretty much have the gist of the story. That is until Gil somehow comes back into Tilda's life. Gil isn't a vampire but he's not alive either, he's among the undead. For me the story should have ended there, but it didn't. I think thats why I didn't give it a better rating than just 2 stars. An affair with the undead Gil, a fight with the nest of undead creatures that want to suck her blood, and go after her daughter and go after her husband... well it just went on and on. I was actually relieved to get to the end of the book.
