Book Description

"This solidly written horror story mixes some unusual elements with others that are tried and true to create a satisfying read." Publishers Weekly

Struggling to balance a career with obligations to her family, a musician's life is suddenly complicated by the return of an old boyfriend, one who died twenty years ago.

At 24, Tilda Parish had it all; her own band and a man she knew was 'the one' but fate had other plans. A fatal car crash took her boyfriend's life and sent Tilda into a spiral of grief.

Seventeen years later, Tilda is married with a 13-year old daughter but her career as a singer-songwriter has been turbulent and unstable. Unable to balance her volatile career with her obligations to her family, Tilda makes a life-changing decision to walk away from music forever. Yet, after burning her guitar in a ritual bonfire, Tilda discovers that the past isn't done with her. Hints of her old life pop up mysteriously and ghosts of her past haunt her present.

Alone one night, Tilda confronts an intruder she believes to be a stalker but the figure that steps from the shadows almost stops her heart. Her old beau appears, the one who died all those years ago.

He hasn't aged a day. He says that he never stopped loving her and that he wants her back. Despite his death and the intervening seventeen years, Tilda realizes that she never stopped loving him either.

And now Tilda Parish is caught between two worlds; the everyday world of her husband and family and this new spooky world of an old lover who has returned from the shadow of death to find her.

What's an ex-musician to do?

5.0 out of 5 stars A brilliantly written, fascinating paranormal story.... September 23, 2013
By Angel
Format:Kindle Edition
I greatly enjoyed reading this extraordinarily well-written book. McGregor's use of (very clever) descriptive language draws the reader into his story where we meet the main character, Tilda, a forty-one-year-old wife and mother going through a bit of a mid-life crisis as she contemplates the end of a quasi-successful music career. Her husband, Shane (a most likable character), is supportive and loving and her thirteen-year-old daughter is quite rude, nasty and selfish (yep, a typical teen girl). McGregor does an exceptional job creating characters that are relatable--characters that readers can identify with.

I thought the storyline was unique and compelling. Tilda's former boyfriend, who has been dead for nearly twenty years, suddenly reappears leaving Tilda torn between her unresolved feelings for him and her love for her family. As Tilda discovers the truth about him, she becomes entangled in the madness, to her family's detriment. I never reveal spoilers, so I'll leave it at that...! I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves paranormal fiction. I wanted to savor this book while at the same time I wanted to keep reading to find out what would happen next.

One last thing: I absolutely loved how McGregor incorporated humor throughout the story in just the right areas so that his readers can better experience what his characters are feeling. For instance, I laughed out loud when Shane wonders wherefrom his teen-aged daughter, Molly, inherited her "hateful scorn and hair-trigger rage." He suspects if not Satan himself, then some lesser demon, like Baalzebub! Come on, now that was just too funny. I guarantee anyone with a pre-adolescent or adolescent child will appreciate that one!

I will certainly be reading more of McGregor's books in the near future.

5.0 out of 5 stars Blown away October 30, 2013
By Allison
Format:Kindle Edition
I love a brillant story that just blows you away. Going into a book without any forethought is the best.
Tim McGregor's pen and twisted trails lead the reader on a path that we could travel easily.
From the first page to the last I was hooked, never a lag or dull page.

This read is so filled with whit as well of brillant deeper thoughts that I still am left with traces on my brain.
His writing nails my once teenage daughter as being a "ninja assasin of words" then to goes on with the deep meaning of music..."music doesn't go through your brain it goes to the gut first, no other art form does that." and so much more.

All the family dynamics of these characters are solid and real and anyone can relate their own lives to.
I was so content with this fast and exciting read...from the beginning to the end.

And who can not love a ending that isn't hanging you on a cliff ledge but leaves you pondering the possibilites of more in a deep and serious way. I look forward to reading more from the pen of Tim McGregor!!!

A surprise paranormal read!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent storytelling October 22, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I am not a big fan of vampire novels. I think the genre has been played out for a long time. That being said, every once in a while an author can use that particular plot device and build an interesting story around it. Such is the case with Tim McGregor and his "Old Flames, Burned Hands." The story is developed so intricately that it took me nearly 200 pages to realize it actually was a vampire novel. I read the book in one sitting, and I automatically added it to my "read again" list.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not What You Expect in a Vampire Book November 14, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I've read the Twilight books. I've read the Sookie Stackhouse series of books. I watched more than my fair share of vampire movies. This book was not what you would expect from one with a vampire theme.

Molly is your typical teenager who does nothing but give her parents a hard time. Tilda and Shane are her parents. Tilda is a musician and does massage therapy on the side. Shane works outside the home. Tilda and Shane have been together almost 20 years. They met shortly after the accident that hospitalized her and killed her then boyfriend Gil. The book takes you inside their seemingly normal family life until one evening Tilda meets someone in the shadows of their yard that she hasn't seen since the accident.

I have to admit I'm not exactly sure how I feel about the book. Without giving away too much of the plot, there were times in the book when I was screaming at Tilda to just do the right thing. The book begins to get exciting when Tilda discovers this person from her past is more changed than she realizes and puts her in danger that she never expected to find herself in.

I can say that the book has somewhat of a bittersweet ending for the family.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Really Good Read October 21, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The twists and turns of this tale kept me wondering how on earth everything could be sorted out to a satisfactory ending. The story sucked me in and I just kept reading - and was not disappointed at all. Well done and a very different 'take' on a genre I read often.

It was kind of nice to have a small walk down music memory lane. It was nothing that I expected, but I enjoyed it just the same.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not your average vampire love story December 24, 2013
By Pat
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
If your looking for a sexy hot vampire story this is not your book. However, if you are interested in a scary story with bitter sweet love and a lot of reality you will love this book. The characters were well developed and the story compelling. I couldn't put it down. If you like this you will also like his 2 book series starting with "Bad Wolf". There are a few editing errors, but overall I really enjoyed the book

More About the Author

Tim McGregor is a novelist, screenwriter and refugee from the realm of DIY comic books. His films include the apocalyptic thriller 'Final Storm' and the comedy-horror 'Bitten', which was recently retitled in the UK as, get this, 'Vampire Apocalypse'. It's sooo not that, go figure. His first produced feature is... wait for it.... UKM: the Ultimate Killing Machine. No word of a lie, that's the title the producers gave it. This may have precipitated his step back from the rarified air of film-making.

A former cartoonist, Tim began putting out his own comic books in the heyday of do-it-yourself zines. Frustrated at his narrative deficits, a friend suggested studying screenwriting as a way to learn basic storytelling. This lead to an interest in writing for the screen and a stint at the Canadian Film Centre. Chafing at the collaborative mind-meld of filmmaking, Tim swung his focus into writing books. Embracing the new world of self-publishing and ebooks, he's come full circle back to the gritty realm of do-it-yourself shazam.

Tim lives in Toronto with his wife and two children.
