Build Vocabulary,
By A Customer
This review is from: Old Hat New Hat (Bright & Early Board Books(TM)) (Board book)
I read about this book in a parenting magazine and picked it up because it was inexpensive. Although the illustrations can not compete with some of the exquisite books available to our children, my 20 month old daughter memorized with joy and gusto this simple story. In fact, it started her using adjectives in her own speech. The Bright and Early books are successful because the simple meter and clear pictures are pure delight to children. Get it out of the library and when your child is as obsessed as mine became, you can order your own copy from Amazon!

The first book my son "read",
By Slim Tan (Singapore, Singapore Singapore) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Old Hat New Hat (Bright & Early Board Books(TM)) (Board book)
This is the first book my then 2 year old son "read" all by himself & I've captured it on video which he watches with delight. He must have been so proud of himself he later went on to read independently by 3. He's now 5 and reading Dick King-Smith and The Magic Tree House books and Wayside School stories and World Book entries and anything he lays his hands on. It's about a bear with a tatty hat who goes into a store to buy a new hat. The salesman shows him many hats which he rejects as being too big, too small, too flat, too tall, etc. It's a great way to introduce adjectives and rhyme and improve memory and boost confidence too. It comes with a surprise ending too. it's a very simple book, but perhaps that's the beauty of it - that it can do so much with so little.

Fun and Easy to Read,
This review is from: Old Hat New Hat (Bright & Early Board Books(TM)) (Board book)
My son is 2 and loves books. This has now become his favorite book! He laughed the first time I read it to him and he now "reads" it to me (he has memorized the entire book!). He loves that he can "read" it and still laughs at the story. Of course, now everything in his everyday life is "too scratchy" or "too bumpy".
Great book for beginning readers.

Old Hat - New Hat : The Berenstain Bears,

When my children were little they loved this book. Over the years there have been many occasions that have spured someone to recall the title of this beloved story. It always brings a smile to our faces. I have since purchased other copies for my grandchildren.

Not the *best* early reader, but still a good book,
By Ulyyf "Connie" (NYC) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Old Hat New Hat (Hardcover)
This is one of the earlier Berenstain Bear books, and it shows. Despite the cover, the bears on the *inside* of this book are less stylized and cutesy than the bears in the newer books, and the story is an early reader instead of a longer read-aloud.
It's a cute little story about a cub suffering from "grass is greener" syndrome, but unable to decide which hat to get. Eventually he decides his old one is perfect - you saw that coming! There are only a few words per page, with a basic vocabulary, so this one is perfect little-little ones learning to talk. I do find that many of the words in this book are too uncommon, too long, or follow too odd spelling rules for this book to really function as an early reader. But it's so funny that I don't think that really matters.

A Kid's Review
This review is from: Old Hat New Hat (Bright & Early Books) (Paperback)
This book is really cute. How a bear wants a new hat but cant find one. So the store clerk comes out with a whole bunch of hat's, but the bear doesn't like them. Then the bear ends up picking his old hat.

Old Hat New Hat,
By A Customer
This review is from: Old Hat New Hat (Hardcover)
The illustrations and vocabulary are limited in this book but it's amazing the funny stories you can tell with two word sentences - we follow the main character into a hat store, he tries out a whole bunch of hats, 'too blue, to spotty, too red, too dotty, too frilly, too silly ...and he finally settles for - well, his old hat. My two year old will go digging in his book box for this one ignoring the prettier pictures and wordier board books - it's been over a year. He Loves this little guy - must be that treasure of an old hat. Well worth the money

I bought this for my one year old for his first birthday because it was a favorite of his Dad's growing up. He wasn't too interested in books quite yet but once he got this book, he started carrying it around and bringing it to me to read. I probably read this book to him five times a day. His older sister (3) can read it to him too since she has all the words memorized. The illustrations are fun and the words are rhyming and have a great rhythm. It's such a quick read too that I don't mind reading it to him five times a day either! There's a reason this book is still in print and that's because it's so fun for little kids!

Very few words tell a very old story of human nature as well as this one. Hanging onto what we know rather than what we thought was exciting, this book delights the funny bone. I like stories for kids that they can easily read at age 4 and 5 that provide a story with a surprise ending. I have loved this book ever since I first bought it for my daughter over 40 years ago. I bought it again for another child this last year. He is as pleased as can be that he can read a book all the through at the age of 5. This is an excellent beginner book that nobody will ever want to toss aside even as they grow older. My kids still have warm fuzzies when they pick it up.
